Historical Description

GITTISHAM is a parish and village, on the river Otter, and near the road from London to Exeter, 2 ½ miles south-west from Honiton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 3 ½ north-east from Ottery St. Mary and 14 north-east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, East Budleigh hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ottery and archdoaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church is a building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave of three bays, south aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock, fixed in 1899 in place of a former one at a cost of £75, and 3 bells, re-hung in 1898 at a cost of £66: the rood loft stairs remain, but the screen, existing till after 1840, has now disappeared: in the aisle is a fine monument of various marbles with kneeling effigies and a long rhyming inscription to Henry Beaumont esq. ob. April 1, 1591, and Elizabeth (Bluett) his wife; above the monument is a shield of arms; this aisle appears to have been built by Humphry Beaumont, father of the preceding, and the capitals of the piers of its arcade display the arms of Beaumont, Merton, Stowell and other families, and the initials “E.H.” “H.B.”: on the floor is a slab inscribed to Humfrey Beaumont esq. ob. Aug. 12, 1572, and there is also a memorial to the Putt family, 1686: the chancel was restored in 1869: there are four stained windows, one in the chancel being a memorial erected by Mrs. F. A. Marker, to her husband, the Rev. Thomas John Marker. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1571; marriages and burials, 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £225, including 47 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Richard Marker esq. and held since 1872 by the Rev. Frederick Thomas Salmon, of St. Bees. The Rectory House is a fine residence and a prominent object for many miles round. There are charities of £180 yearly value, principally derived from a legacy of £800, bequeathed by Henry Beaumont esq. in 1590. Combe, a fine old mansion, was the residence, for nearly 200 years, of the Putts; the family is now extinct, and the property having descended to the Marker family through the female line, is now the residence of Richard Marker esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. Pomeroy is the residence of Mrs. Hayhurst-France. The soil is clayey; the subsoil varies, being mostly marl and stony clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots and pasturage. The area is 2,232 acres; rateable value £3,609; the population in 1901, including a hamlet of Buckerell added for civil purposes March 24, 1884, by Local Government Board Order 16,349, was 336.

National School (mixed), built in 1871, with teacher’s residence, & since enlarged, for 88 children; average attendance, 86; & chiefly supported by Richard Marker esq.
