Historical Description

HALBERTON is a parish and village, near the Grand Western canal, and on the road from Tiverton to Wellington (Somerset), 2 miles north-west from Tiverton Junction station on the Great Western railway, and 3 east from Tiverton, in the North Eastern division of the county, Halberton hundred, Callompton petty sessional division, union and county court district of Tiverton, rural deanery of Tiverton East and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Andrew is a fine building of stone, in the Late Decorated style of the early part of the 15th century, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the church retains a fine carved oak screen, highly enriched, c. 1420, and a pulpit of the same date. In 1881 some minor restorations were made, and in 1887 the chancel was restored, the floor being re-paved, the walls ashlared with Corse Hill stone and red Devonshire marble, and a reredos of carved oak erected and surmounted by a triptych containing paintings on panels, of the “Annunciation,” the “Crucifixion,” and the “Nativity,” and the folding portions figures of saints, the whole costing about £500: in 1892 an eagle lectern, finely carved in oak, was provided, and in 1894 a stained window placed in the north chapel. In 1898—9 the church was re-seated throughout in oak, and re-floored in wood, at a cost of nearly £900: there are sittings for 500 persons. In 1886 an addition of a third of an acre was made to the churchyard and consecrated. The register dates from the year 1606. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £400, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1872 by the Rev. Edmund Ironside Gregory M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, rural dean of Tiverton East and prebendary of Exeter. The Mission church at Ash Thomas, with Sunday school attached, was erected in 1877, a cost £600, and has 100 sittings.

There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1816, a Bible Christian chapel, erected in 1860, and a Baptist chapel at Ash Thomas, built in 1890. The charities include N. Spicer’s of £70 a year, and a number of smaller charities, amounting together to about £48 a year, and administered by a body of trustees. Bridwell, the seat of Richard Hall Clarke esq. D.L., J.P. whose ancestors have resided there since the 15th century, is the principal house in the parish. R. H. Clarke esq. who is lord of the manor of Halberton Boys, George Coombe esq. William Wyndham esq. of Dinton House, Reginald Francis Hill esq. and Mrs. Partridge are the principal landowners. The soil is rich, and the subsoil, clayey. The chief crops are wheat, barley, cereals and grass, with some fruit. The acreage is 7,355, exclusive of coppice land-total, 7,521 of land and 32 of water; rateable value, £14,306; the population in 1901 was 1,221.

By a Local Government Board Order, 16,306, which came into operation March 24, 1884, a detached part of this parish, known as the tithing of Chief Loman, was united to Uplowman for civil purposes.
