Halwell Banns (1654-1915)

Historical Description

HALWELL near Totnes, is a parish and village, at the junction of the roads from Totnes and Dartmouth to Plymouth, 6 miles south-west from Totnes station on the main line and 3 ½ north-east from Gara Bridge station on the Kingsbridge and Brent branch line of the Great Western railway, north-west from Dartmouth, and 6 ½ north-east from Kingsbridge, in the Southern division of the county, Coleridge and Stanborough hundred and petty sessional division, Totnes union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Leonard is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, new roofed in 1897, and containing 6 bells, all cast in 1763 from a previous peal of 4, with the exception of the 4th, which dates from 1823, and was rehung in 1897: the ancient screen was removed in 1810: the east window is stained: there are monuments to Major-General Symons, d. 1831, and Ann, his widow, d. 1847: the church affords 220 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1585; marriages, 1559; burials, 1560. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Benjamin Wheeler: the trustees of the late William Hawker Helyar esq. are owners of the great tithes, valued at £230. Here is a Congregational chapel. There are remains of two ancient encampments. The trustees of the late William C. Nainby-Luxmore esq. of Thorganhy, Lincs. the trustees of the late Admiral Cornisi-Bowden J.P. of Oak Lawn, Newton Abbot, the trustees of Hele's charity, and John Martin Andrew esq. of Plymouth, are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is dunstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasturage. The area is 3,335 acres; rateable value, £2,953; the population in 1901 was 284.

A detached portion of the parish, including the Yabsley estate, where was formerly the Grange or Bam of the Abbots of Torre for their Blackawton property, was transferred to Blackawton parish by Local Government Board Order 16,310, March 24, 1884.

A School Board of 5 members for the united district of Halwell & Morleigh was formed April 29, 1875; W. F. Hamlyn, Totnes, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1878, for 70 children; average attendance, 39.
