Historical Description

HARBERTON is a parish and village, seated in a pleasant valley, through which the river Harbourne flows, about 2 ½ miles south-west from Totnes station on the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Coleridge, petty sessional division of Stanborough and Coleridge, Totnes union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Andrew is a fine edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch with parvise and a lofty western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock with two dials and chimes, the gift of Sir R. Harvey, Kt. placed in 1898, and bells, all cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1762, and re-hung, 1896, by Mr. Harry Stokes, of Woodbury, the 4th bell being at the same time re-cast by Messrs. Mears and Stainbank, London: the chancel retains three canopied stone stalls and a piscina, and there are two mural brasses on black marble, erected by the late Major Trist, of Tristford, in memory of his two sons, who died in India and the West Indies: the stone pulpit is octagonal, richly carved with foliage, and has figures of apostles in niches: the fine wood screen, 41 feet in length, and containing eleven bays exclusive of doors, was thoroughly restored at the cost of the late Mrs. Pendarves, of Tristford, about 1870, and there are two light parcloses: in 1896 new windows were erected on the south side to the memory of Major Trist; and a mural tablet erected to the Rev. H. Bartholomew, late vicar, who died April 18, 1896, after a residence of 37 years: the font is Anglo-Norman. In the churchyard is a large marble mausoleum belonging to the Harvey family, and surmounted by a tall cross; within are three marble sarcophagi, one of which contains the remains of the son and heir of Sir Robert Harvey Kt. who died at school in 1895, and also bears a life-size recumbent effigy, executed by Hems, of Exeter: in the churchyard also stands a cross, restored by Hems, at the cost of Sir R. Harvey: in 1898 a reredos, of alabaster and mosaic, was presented by the Hon. Mrs. and Miss Dorothy Jervoise Smith. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1623; marriages 1625; burials, 1621. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 79 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William George Mallett, who is also a surrogate. The vicarial tithes were, commuted in 1842 for £535, of which sum £80 a year is paid to the vicar of Harbertonford, and the rectorial for £400 yearly; the latter belong to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, but are leased to W. H. Helyar esq. There is a Mission chapel at East Leigh, erected in 1894. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. In the valley of the Harbourne is Hill Mill, the edge tool manufactory of Messrs. Knapman and Son. The parish lands, which have been vested in trust from an early period, comprise several houses and gardens in the village and 18 acres of land, called “Cockwells,” together producing about £68 a year, part of which is applied in aid of the church rates, and the remainder distributed among the poor of the parish at Christmas and Easter. A blacksmith’s shop, house, orchard and garden, let for £8, were left about 1630, by William Huxham, for the benefit of the poor. Here is an almshouse of ten small rooms for as many poor people, built about 1580, in pursuance of the will of Henry Wise; other charities amount to £20 yearly. In this parish are rocks of excessively hard trapstone, and a remarkable metamorphic rock, named the “Berrystone,” consisting of organic remains, coral &c.: here are also quarries producing blue slate. Harberton gives the title of Viscount (1791) in the Irish peerage to the family of Pomeroy. Tristford is the seat of Francis Warren Trist esq. who will attain his majority and come into occupation in 1903. The manor was anciently held by the Valletorts, but the land is now all freehold. The principal landowners are the Trist trustees. Rev. T. C. Lewis, Rev. W. D. Rundle, Rev. William Edward Paige M.A. of Paignton, Miss Louisa Paige, Sir Robert Harvey, of Dundridge, Charles William Tayleur esq. of 97 Cadogan gardens, London S W, the trustees of the late Duchess of Cleveland (d. 1900), Richard Huxham Watson esq. of Brook, Totnes, and the Misses Carew, of Haccombe.
