Historical Description
Hathehleigh, an ancient market and incorporated town, situated on a branch of the river Torridge, near its confluence with the Oke. The town has but a mean appearance, the houses being in general built of what is called cobb-walling, or red earth and thatch.
The inhabitants, of which there are 1499, are chiefly employed in agriculture, and the woollen manufacture. The number of houses is 286. The government of the town is vested in a portreeve, two constables, and other inferior officers annually chosen.
HATHERLEIGH is a market town and parish, on the river Lew, near its confluence with the Torridge, 7 miles north-east from Ashbury station on the Okehampton and Holsworthy branch of the London and South Western railway, 9 west from North Tawton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 8 north-west from Okehampton, 12 south-east from Torrington, 18 south-east from Bideford, 28 north-west from Exeter and 200 from London; it is the head of a petty sessional division, and in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Okehampton union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. About a mile from the town is a bridge of 3 arches over the river Torridge, built in the year 1812, of freestone quarried in the parish, at the expense of the county. The town is governed by a portreeve and other officers, elected annually at the court-leet held within the borough. In the years 1840 and 1846 it suffered from fire, but most of the houses were afterwards rebuilt and the streets much improved; it is lighted with gas by a company, formed in 1868: there is a public pump, but the town is now supplied with water pumped from a spring in Hall meadow into an elevated service reservoir, and from there conveyed by gravitation to the town. The town has been perfectly drained by the Rural District Council at a cost of £3,000. Powers have been obtained to construct a railway from Okehampton to Torrington, passing through Hatherleigh, at which place there will be a station. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and a spire 50 feet high and containing 8 bells, of which 6 were cast by Mr. Thomas Bilbie, of Cullompton, in the year 1812, and 2 by Taylor, of Loughboro’, in 1883: a clock, which chimes every three hours, was added in 1864, at a cost of about £130: in the south aisle is a monument to John Lethbridge esq. of Deckport, who died in the year 1706, and was a benefactor to this parish, and a memorial window to James Harris Veale esq. of Passaford, d. 1876; in the same aisle is another window to Emily, wife of the above, d. 1879: in the north aisle are memorial windows to Frances Elizabeth, wife of the late Joseph Oldham esq. of Strawbridge, and Evelyn Camilla Hooper; and there is another in the tower to Louisa Elizabeth Oldham: the brass lectern was presented by Joseph Oldham esq.: the roof is finely carved and there is a carved pulpit: since 1881 the church has been much improved both internally and externally: there are 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 51 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Arthur Clayfield Ireland esq. J.P. and Miss Mary Louisa Ireland, alternately, and held since 1878 by the Rev. John Waters Banks M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. There is a Baptist chapel in High street, with 250 sittings, and a Bible Christian chapel and school room, in Bridge street, erected in 1880, at a cost of £600, with 280 sittings. The Police Court, in South street, is a stone building, with large Court room, where the petty sessions for the division are held. The old Market houses were burnt in the year 1840, and a new building erected in the same year. The market is held on Tuesday, by charter of 5th of William and Mary. Four cattle fairs are held in this town-on the 21st of May, the 22nd of June, the 4th of September and the 8th of November; should any of those dates happen to fall on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, then the fair is held on the Tuesday following; one of these fairs is held under the same charter as the market. The Public Subscription Rooms were built in the year 1821, and will hold 200 persons. The Hatherleigh and District Working Men’s Constitutional Club, in Market street, formed in 1895, has a library containing 100 volumes and a reading room. There are two benefit societies-the Union Society for males, established in 1763, and the Union Society for females, established in 1793; there is also a lodge of Odd Fellows, belonging to the Manchester Unity. Besides Lethbridge’s benefaction of £100, Walter Bennett gave £100 and Richard Lucas £50, the interest of all these sums being distributed yearly in bread and clothing to such poor persons as receive no parochial relief: Roger Walter gave £30, which has been expended in purchasing an annuity of £2, and Joseph Gliddon gave 10s. yearly out of his lands in Bulkworthy; these two last sums are added to the former interest and disposed of as above: Charles Luxmore esq. gave £100, and the Rev. Cradock Glascott £50 towards the education of poor children; the interest is applied to the support of the Church Sunday school. Jasper Mayne D.D. chaplain to King Charles II. and archdeacon of Chichester, noted as a preacher and dramatic writer, was born in this town in the year 1604, and died in 1672. Reed House, the property of Samuel Pethrick esq. is the residence of Miss Leishman. Hatherleigh Moor, a waste land of about 430 acres, a short distance from the town, was part of the old Saxon borough; it belongs to the lord of the borough, who is also lord of the manor; on this moor the inhabitants of the borough have a right of grazing their cattle and cutting furze for fuel: here also is St. John’s Well, the water from which was formerly used at baptisms: in 1860 a monument was erected on a piece of land adjoining the moor, by public subscription, at a cost of £400, to Lieut.-Colonel Morris C.B. late of Fishleigh, in this parish, who distinguished himself at Balaklava, October 25th, 1854. The manor formerly belonged to Tavistock Abbey, and after the dissolution of the monasteries was granted to the Arscott family; in 1788 it passed by will to Sir William Molesworth, by whom it was sold to the late Mr. Joseph Oldham, of Caynham Court, Salop, and by him bequeathed to his cousin Joseph, eldest son of the late George Edward Laing esq. of St. Albans, Herts, who assumed by royal licence the name and arms of Oldham in lieu of his patronymic. Ernest Joseph Oldham esq. B.A., D.L., J.P. of Strawbridge, is the present lord of the manor and borough of Hatherleigh. Courts leet and courts baron are still held. Fishleigh belongs to Thos. Gascoigne esq.; Langabeare belonged to the ancestors of the Hon. P. B. Brett, late M.P. for Falmouth, and is now the property of Mrs. Andrews, of Pressland House. Passaford, purchased by the Rev. W.
