The river Culm flows through the parish, and is noted for the quantity and excellence of its trout. The church of St. Mary, restored and enlarged in 1847 by the addition of a north aisle, is a large building of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there is a screen between the chancel and north aisle: the font consists of a Norman basin on a shaft of Perpendicular date: there are 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1635. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Culm-Davey annexed, net yearly income £470, including 104 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of F. W. L. Popham esq. Littlecote, Wiltshire, and held since 1896 by the Rev. John De Burgh Forbes Th. Assoc. K.C.L. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. Here is the butter factory of the Culm Valley Dairy Co. Limited, the oldest of its kind in England; a new building was erected in 1897 and elaborately fitted with modern apparatus. An important market for live stock is held here every 3rd Monday in the month, and is well attended. There are charities to the amount of about £29, the principal being Walrond’s of £5, Land’s of £12, and the Second Poor Fund of £13, annually. Here are the remains of a castle, formerly belonging to the Hidon family, who occupied it until the reign of Edward I. when it passed to the Dynhams, and was divided between the four sisters of Sir John Dynham kt. sixth Baron Dynham K.G. and treasurer of England; in 1642 it was captured by the Royalists under John, 1st Baron Poulett, and eventually dismantled; portions of four of the towers and the gatehouse, a structure of flint, with part of the moat still remain, but are fast falling to decay. Mr. George Barton, who is lord of the manor, Colonel Robert William Webb Follett, of Woodside, Old Windsor, Messrs. Charles Rowcliffe, Edwd, and Samuel Farrant, Mrs. Farrant and Edward Lutley are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and some land in pasture. The area is 5,894 acres; rateable value, £6,914; the population in 1901 of the civil parish was 835, about 83 of whom are within the ecclesiastical parish of Dunkeswell Abbey.

The hamlet and chapelry of CULM-DAVEY, 1 ½ miles north, is in this parish. The chapel here, about 1 ½ miles from the village of Hemyock, is an ancient building of flint stone, with sittings for 60 persons, and is served by the Rector of Hemyock. The old manor house, now occupied as a farmhouse by Mr. Edward Lutley, retains some ancient stone and plaster work.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Mar. 16, 1875; Edwin Wide, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1877, at a cost of about £1,200, for 156 children; average attendance, 124.
