Historical Description

HENNOCK is a parish and village, seated on an elevation commanding an extensive prospect, bounded on the east by the river reign, and is 1 ½ miles south-west from Trusham station on the reign Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 8 north-by-west from Newton Abbot and 7 south-east from Moreton Hampstead, in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred and petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The large reservoirs which supply Torquay and Newton Abbot with water are situate in this parish. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, an ancient building of rough stone, mainly in the Perpendicular style, was completely restored in 1873 at a cost of £1,200, given principally by James Wills esq. in memory of two sons: it consists of chancel with aisles or chapels, nave, aisles divided from the nave by arcades of four arches, south porch and an embattled western tower, of Early English date, 40 feet in height, with pinnacles, and containing 4 bells, the first of which is an alphabet bell from A to K; the second and fourth date from 1637; the third bears a prayer to the Virgin in Old English characters: the chancel retains a priest’s doorway, and on the south side also are the rood loft stairs, both doorways remaining: the rood screen is a finely carved work of Perpendicular date; the lower portion is panelled and painted with figures of saints, angels, and a representation of the “Annunciation”; the screen extends across the whole width of the church, but has lost its groined work: traces of a stoup remain in the porch: the communion table, of richly carved oak, of Elizabethan date, was made from the old parish chest; in the south aisle is a memorial window, erected by Mr. Wills, of Kelly, in 1856: the font is late Norman, c. 1170, and its basin, is supported on a thick cylindrical pedestal, surrounded by four slender shafts of greenish stone. Much ancient stained glass and some tiles were taken away during the restoration: there are 500 sittings. The parish register dates from the year 1544 and contains the following record of the birth of Edward VI.: “The eleventh day of October, the yeare of our Lord God 1537, was born Prince Edwarde, which was the 29th yeare of our Sovereign Lord King Henry VIII. God send him good oldinge, and his Father a long and prosperous reign. Amen.” The living is a vicarage, yearly value £180, with residence and 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. F. G. Riley M.A. vicar of Chudleigh Knighton and the Rev. Edward S. Shuttleworth M.A. rector of St. Stephen, in Brannell, Cornwall, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Robert Medley Fulford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities include the rent of 1 ¼ acres of land, left by James Stooke in 1699 and the interest of £5, left by Elizabeth Gribble in 1726, and are distributed in bread. An ancient cross, which stood in the centre of the village street, was removed about 1875. The land is held by numerous freeholders. The soil is light; subsoil, part sand and part clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 3,271 acres of land and 28 of water; rateable value, £3,860; the population in 1891 was 685 in the civil parish, which includes Chudleigh Knighton, and 327 in the ecclesiastical parish, and in 1901 was 711 in the civil parish.

By Local Government Board Order 16,367, which came into operation March 25, 1885, and by the Divided Parishes Act, 1882, a detached part of Hennock was added to Bovey Tracey for civil purposes.
