Historical Description
HOCKWORTHY is a parish and small village on the borders of Somerset, 3 ½ miles south from Venn Cross station on the Somerset and Devon branch, and 4 north-west from Burlescombe station on the Bristol and Exeter section of the Great Western railway, 6 south-east from Bampton, 8 north-east from Tiverton, and 7 west-south-west from Wellington, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred of Bampton, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of East Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of SS. Simon and Jude, which stands on a hill, is a building of stone in the Early English style, and was rebuilt and restored, with the exception of the tower, in 1865; it consists of chancel, nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells and a clock: the east window was presented by the late vicar in 1865 as a memorial to his father, the previous patron: there are memorial windows to Durnford Greenway esq. and to the Rev. William James Newman M.A. vicar (1860—80), and his wife: a new organ was erected in 1884 by the present vicar: the church will seat 220 persons. The register dates from the year 1577. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £189, including 67 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1880 by the Rev. Wm. Frederick Newman M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. There is a charity of £2 (less 5s. land tax) yearly payable out of Thornland estate, also one of £8 yearly for the school, provided it is kept as a Church of England school, and £8 yearly for beef for the poor at Christmas, left by the late Dr. Troyte in 1848. There are quarries here producing a very superior kind of stone, suitable for building purposes and susceptible of a polish equal to that of marble. Hugh Leonard Acland Troyte esq. of Huntsham Court, is lord of the manor, and Messrs. William Dester, W. H. White, and the vicar are the principal landowners. The soil is limy; and the subsoil is limestone and rock. The chief crops are barley, oats and some wheat. The area is 2,677 acres; rateable value, £2,211 the population in 1901 was 253.
By Local Government Board Order 16,305, which came into operation March 24, 1884, Stallingthorne has been added to this parish from Huntsham for civil purposes.
