Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
HOLBETON is a village and large parish, seated on an eminence and bounded on the east by the estuary of the river Erme; it is 5 ½ miles south from Ivybridge station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 4 south-west from Modbury and 10 south-east from Plymouth, in the Southern division of the county, Ermington and Plympton hundred and petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union and county court district of East Stonehouse, and in the rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The village has been much improved during the last few years and a fresh supply of water brought from the neighbouring hills. The church of All Saints, a fine old cruciform structure, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and a lofty western tower, with spire, containing 6 bells: there is a very curious font of Norman date, and several monuments to the Hele, Bulteel and Perring families: the screens are singularly handsome examples of 15th century wood carving, enriched with badges of the rose, portcullis and fleur-de-lis: the rood loft stairs remain, but the rood screen has disappeared: the church was restored at a cost of £20,000 in 1887 by the munificence of H. B. Mildmay esq. of Flete, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1620. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £211, with 3 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Alfred Thomas Allin, of Glasgow University. The tithes were anciently appropriated to the priory of Polshoe. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. There is a coastguard station at Mothecombe. Flete, the situation of which is most romantic, and commands fine views of the river Erme and its estuary, is now the seat of Henry Bingham Mildmay esq. D.L., J.P. by whom the present handsome mansion was erected in place of the former house, now removed: the grounds and gardens are beautifully laid out. The Flete estate was held by the Damerell family from the Conquest to the time of Edward III. and afterwards by the families of Hele and Bulteel, descending from the latter to its present owner. Membland, formerly the seat of the Hillersdons, and now the property of Lord Revelstoke, has been wholly rebuilt and the grounds tastefully laid out: the property formerly belonged to the Perring family. The manor of Holbeton once belonged to the Poverells; it was granted by Henry VII. to his sister-in-law, Lady Margaret Beaufort, widow of Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond. H. B. Mildmay esq. who is lord of the manor, and William Cresswell Gray esq. of Seaton Carew, Durham, are the chief landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, mostly slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 4,631 acres of land and 8 of water, 17 of tidal water and 98 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,444; the population in 1891 was 949.
