Historical Description

HOLCOMBE BURNELL is a parish and village on the main road from Exeter to Moreton Hampstead, 3 ¼ miles west from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wonford hundred and petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone in the Norman and Later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells: the first, cast by Thomas Pennington in 1636, has a Tudor frieze all round above: the two next bear legends in old English characters; the tenor was cast by John Pennington in 1654: the church was rebuilt (excepting the tower) in 1844, at a cost of about £600, and has 200 sittings: the churchyard is approached through an inclosure planted with trees. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1657; marriages, 1663. The living is a vicarage, with rectorial rights, net yearly income £70, including 115 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Sackville George Cresswell: the Vicarage House, placed in a very elevated position, commands a beautiful and extensive view. Culver House, the residence of Edward Byrom esq. D.L. is delightfully seated in a valley and approached by a carriage drive: the house, erected in 1836, is in the Elizabethan style, and is built with stone from the Pocombe quarries, with facings of Beer stone; it contains an oak-panelled room, some fine specimens of old oak and other furniture, and a good collection of old china. The Pitman trustees, who are lords of the manor, and E. Byrom esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil, schistous. The chief crops are oats and root crops. The area is 1,853 acres; rateable value, £1,135; the population in, 1901 was 167.
