Historical Description
HORWOOD is a parish and village, on the old road from Bideford to Barnstaple, 3 ½ miles north-east from Bideford station on the Torrington branch of the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Fremington hundred, Braunton petty sessional division, Bideford county court district, Barnstaple union, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells; the first inscribed “ECCE AGNVS DEI,” in Lombardic letters; the second, “SA: NCTA: MA: RIA”; the tenor is dated 1664: in the north or Pollard aisle is the recumbent effigy of a lady of the early 15th century, in horned head-dress, and wearing a long mantle, partly enwrapped in which are figures of three children; the effigy is believed to represent Emma (Doddesoombe), wife of John Pollard, who, with her, founded this aisle: on the jamb of the window above is a tablet to Arthur Pollard, ob. 1633, and Joan, his wife, ob. 1662, Sarah, their daughter, ob. 1613, and Arthur Pollard, of Instow, gent. ob. 25 August, 1681: there is another memorial to Anthony Pollard esq. ob. 16 June, 1587, and Joan (Stucley), his wife, ob. 27 Feb. 1599, and a stone with an incised cross: the church was restored in 1889, at a cost of £900, under the direction of Messrs. Hayward and Son, architects, of Exeter, when a new roof was placed over the nave, the chancel and aisle roofs restored, oak choir stalls placed in the chancel, and some old carved panels incorporated in the reading desk: during the progress of the work a piscina, probably of the 13th century, was discovered in the south wall of the chancel, and another of later date in the Pollard aisle: fragments of a richly carved stone altar or reredos were also met with; these included the mutilated effigy of a saint, which has been restored and placed in a niche in the porch: the ancient 14th century tiles have been re-laid in the chancel, and in the east window are remains of ancient stained glass: the pulpit is Jacobean: the brass lectern was presented by Mrs. Pinckney, of Feniton Court, and there have been various other gifts: the church now affords 100 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1653; marriages and burials, 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £100, with 45 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Dene, and held since 1870 by the Rev. John Dene B.A. of St. John's College, Oxford, who is also rector of Newton Tracey. There are several ancient castellated buildings in this parish now converted into farm-houses. Rev. Thomas Poltimore Dimond-Hogg M.A. vicar of Saltney, Chester, who is lord of the manor, and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil in some parts is rich; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 875 acres; assessable value, £539; the population in 1901 was 102.
