Historical Description
IDDESLEIGH is a parish and village, on the river Torridge, 8 miles south-west from Eggesford station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, 4 miles north-north-east from Hatherleigh and 10 north from Okehampton and 9 miles north-west from North Tawton, in the Western division of the county, Shebbear hundred, Hatherleigh petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. This place gives the title of earl to the Northcote family. The church of St. James is an ancient building in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 4 bells, of which the first two are dated 1620 and the third 1629; the tenor has an invocation to St. George in old English characters: under an obtuse arch in the north aisle is the recumbent cross-legged effigy of a knight in chain mail, covered with a cyclas and bearing a shield, c. 1250, supposed to represent an ancestor of Sir John Sully K.G. a distinguished warrior of the reigns of Edward I. and Edward II. who had “a fair house and two parks” at Iddesleigh, where he died in 1387, aged 105; there are memorial windows, erected in 1866, to Hugh Mallett, of Ash, d. 1865, and to Maria Louisa Prior; a memorial window has been placed at the east end of the north aisle, by subscription, to Stafford Henry, 1st Earl of Iddesleigh G.C.B., P.C. d. Jan. 12, 1887: a new organ was provided in 1897 at a cost of about £120: there are sittings for 120 persons: the church was repaired and partly rebuilt in 1848, at a cost of about £400, and restored in 1879 at an expense of £1,500. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £270, including 146 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of, and held since 1864 by the Rev. Charles Spackman B.A. of New Inn Hall, Oxford. There is a Bible Christian chapel here, erected in 1890. Ash, the seat of John Smyth Smyth-Osbourne esq. D.L., J.P. by purchase from Hugh Mallet esq. is an ancient building of stone standing on an eminence, in grounds richly timbered, and commanding uninterrupted views of the Dartmoor hills and the valley of the Okement, and is approached through an avenue of fine beech trees. Nethercott is the residence of Mrs. Arnold. The Earl of Iddesleigh C.B. who is lord of the manor, John S. Smyth-Osbourne and Mrs. Arnold are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 2,971 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £2,235; the population in 1901 was 335.
