Historical Description

ILSINGTON is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles west of the great road between Chudleigh and Ashburton, 2 ¾ miles south-west of Bovey station on the Moreton Hampstead branch of the Great Western railway, 7 north-west from Newton Abbot and 5 north-by-east from Ashburton, in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred and petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union and county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The parish church of St. Michael is a fine building, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with remains of a much earlier date, and consists of chancel with side chapels and richly carved oak screen, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the font is ancient: in the north transept is a stone effigy, said to represent one of the Denham family, connected with the parish in the reign of Edward I.: there is also a slab with an elegant incised cross: some of the bench ends, which retain their poppy heads, bear the arms of the Beaumonts and Pomeroys, who possessed Ingsdon, in this parish, in the 15th century: and there is a fine rood screen now despoiled of its groining, and seven stained windows; one in the south transept is a memorial to John and Henrietta Emma Divett, of Bovey Tracey, and was placed by their daughter in 1888; another in the north transept was erected by George Wills esq. in memory of his wife and two sons, who died respectively in 1860, 1870 and 1872; and there are three in the chancel and two in the south chapel: the church was restored and reseated in 1884 at a cost of £1,800, chiefly by public subscriptions, the cost of the restoration of the chancel being defrayed by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: there are 300 sittings: at the eastern entrance to the churchyard is a lych gate. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £281, including 91 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1899 by the Rev. William Russell Fox. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1852, and seating 70; and a Congregational chapel. The Moorland Hotel, now (1901) in course of erection, at a cost of over £4,000, is situated at a short distance from Haytor Rocks, and will command extensive views of the surrounding country: there will be 20 bed rooms, public and private sitting and dining rooms and a large billiard room. Lead, copper and tin mines have been worked; there are granite quarries of excellent quality at Haytor, in the parish. The Haytor Rocks are 1,550 feet in height; other notable eminences are Saddle Tor, 1,500 feet, and Rippon Tor, 1,563 feet, the views from which are very fine. The charities are:-Miss Jane Ford’s, producing £20 yearly, for educating the poor children of the parish, secured on an estate in the parish of Ashburton, and divided between the two National schools in the parish: Candy’s, producing £56 yearly, distributed in coats, hats, shirts and shoes to the poor of the parish: Mrs. Halo left property producing £9 9s. 0d. yearly, to be distributed in money to six old people, who must repeat the Catechism publicly in the church on the first Sunday in November: there is also a charity producing about £35 yearly, vested in the funds for the temporary relief of poor people meeting with accidents or illness, and a benefaction of £300, left about 1893 by W. F. Widger esq. and invested in Consols, the interest being distributed in the form of coals and blankets to the poor of the parish. Ingsdon Manor House is the residence of Charles James Hale Monro esq. J.P. Some remains of the ancient manor house of Hsington exist near the church. The Rev. Prebendary Richard Robbins Wolfe M.A. of Arthington, is lord of the manor of Ilsington, and the Baroness de Virte, of Sandridge Park, C. J. Hale Monro esq. Mrs. Woodley, Miss Divett, of Bovey Tracy, the trustees of the late Alfred Lyon, Charles William Wills, John Bovey esqrs. and Richard Harold St. Maur esq. of Teigngrace, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay in the lower part of the parish and light sandy loam upon the hilly portion; the subsoil is granite and dunstone on the hills, in the lower part clay and part dunstone and limestone. The chief crops are barley, oats, roots and pasturage. The area is 7,842 acres; rateable value, £6,537; the population in 1901 was 886.
