Instow Banns (1755-1915)

Historical Description

INSTOW is a parish and village, at the confluence of the rivers Taw and Torridge, immediately opposite the town of Appledore, and on the high road from Bideford to Barnstaple, having a station on the North Devon extension of the London and South Western railway, and is 6 miles west from Barnstaple, 3 north-east from Bideford and 217 ½ from London, in the North Western division of the county, Fremington hundred, Braunton petty sessional division, Barnstaple union, Bideford county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. Instow is much frequented in summer as a watering place, and a vessel from hence sails every Thursday to Lundy Island in the Bristol channel. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells, of which the first has a legend in Old English letters; the others are dated 1694 and 1682: the church was thoroughly restored in 1875 at a cost of £1,200, and a new vestry was built in 1830: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1717. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £120, including 31 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of A. L. Christie esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Samuel Charles Raines Ph.D. of the University of Rostock. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Joan Tucker’s charity, of £2 yearly, is distributed among the poor. Augustus Langham Christie esq. of Tapeley Park, Westleigh, who is lord of the manor and Miss Arundell Yeo, of Fremington House, are the chief landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, day. The area is 1,698 acres of land, 1 of water, 54 of tidal water and 303 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,973; the population in 1901 was 634.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov. 23, 1874; F. Lee, East Leigh, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1888, for 100 children; average attendance, 87.
