Historical Description
INWARDLEIGH is a parish and village on the road from Okehampton to Hatherleigh, 4 miles north-west from Okehampton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and 4 ½ south-east from Hatherleigh, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Black Torrington, Hatherleigh petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The place derives its name from a Thane called “Inwardus,” who in the time of the Confessor held here the manor of “Lega” or “Leigh.” The church (dedication unknown) is an ancient building of stone, chiefly Early English, with Early Perpendicular insertions, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, separated from the nave by an arcade of four arches, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, rehung in 1899: the base of the tower and the font are Norman: the stained east window was erected by the poor of Inwardleigh in memory of Rebecca Maria Mitchel, late of the city of Bath, and a benefactress to this parish, who died March 19th, 1860, aged 75 years: the church was thoroughly restored and reseated in 1899, at a cost of over £2,500, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1699. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, including 230 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Simeon trustees, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Wilson Griffith Brougham Butlin M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. A Mission room was erected, at Folly Gate, in 1897, at a cost of £225, and will hold 100 persons. There are Baptist, Bible Christian and Wesleyan chapels. The poor have the fourth, part of Newcombe’s (Crediton) charity. Viscount Portman, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Ven. Archdeacon Woollcombe and John Reddaway esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the parish is 6,102 acres; rateable value, £2,487; the population in 1901 was 421.
A School Board of 5 members was formed February 20, 1877; J. D. Prickman, Okehampton, clerk to the board; Samuel Landick, attendance officer.
