Historical Description

KENN is a parish and village on the river Kenn and near the Plymouth road, 2 ½ miles south-south-west from Exminster station on the main line of the Great Western railway, and 4 south from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Exminster hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Andrew, restored in 1889, under the direction of Mr. H. Woodyer, architect, is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, all cast by Mears, of London, in 1826; the fine screen was restored, and the rood and accompanying figures replaced in 1885 at the expense of the late Rev. Reginald Porter M.A. rector 1858—94, the work being carried out by Hems and Sons, of Exeter; there are a few monuments, a Norman font and several stained windows: the church has been restored at different times at a cost of £2,000, and affords 300 sittings. In the churchyard is a very large yew tree, said to be between 800 and 900 years old. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £508, with residence and 199 acres of glebe, in the gift of John Henry Francis Ley esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Frank Whitaker Vining M.A. of Pembroke College, Oxford. The charities, amounting to £2 8s. yearly, are distributed in bread on Easter eve and Christmas eve. Haldon House, the seat of James Fitz-Gerald Bannatyne esq. J.P. is a handsome mansion, standing on a commanding eminence in a finely-wooded park; the views from the house are grand and extensive. Trehill, the seat of John Henry Francis Ley esq. D.L., J.P.; Bickham House, the seat of Miss Short, and Woodlands, that of the Rev. Roger Granville M.A. are all mansions of some importance. The principal landowners are James FitzGerald Bannatyne esq.; J. H. F. Ley esq. who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late F. A. Short esq. The soil is loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are corn and roots, also much grazing land. The area is 5,241 acres; rateable value, £5,927; the population in 1901 was 773, not including Perridge, a hamlet part of the ecclesiastical parish of Kenn and numbers about 12 inhabitants. By Local Government Board Order 16,545, which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of this parish known as Perridge was transferred to Ide for civil purposes. Kenn Reading Room, erected in 1878 by the Rev. Reginald Porter M.A. rector 1658—94, is a neat and substantial building, comprising reading and games rooms, with small billiard and bagatelle tables, and supplied with the London and local papers, magazines &c.; there is also a library of about 400 vols, and an attached skittle alley; this institution has about 50 members and is open daily from 1 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m.
