Historical Description

Kenton, a small village; the manor of which has a curious custom —that if the issue of any of the tenants hold their tenements, one after another, three descents, they may claim the inheritance of the tenement. The church of Kenton is a handsome building of red stone, with a tower 100 feet high. The interior is ornamented with various antique carved work and rude painting.

About a mile from Kenton is Oxton-house, the seat of the Rev. John Swete. The house stands upon an eminence, at the junction of three narrow vallies, with Haldon-hill behind. This delightfully sequestered mansion is rendered peculiarly picturesque and interesting by the extensive ornamented grounds around it, and the beautiful prospects from various parts of the estate.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

KENTON is a large parish and village, on the road from Dawlish to Exeter, 1 ½ miles north-west from Starcross station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 5 north from Dawlish and 7 south-by-east from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Ex-minster hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The village is lighted with gas from works at Southtown, the property of the Starcross and Kenton Gas Light Company Limited, established in 1877. The church of All Saints, a fine building of red sandstone, in the Early Perpendicular style, consists of chancel with aisles, nave of seven bays, aisles, south porch with parvise over, and an embattled western tower, 100 feet in height, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast by T. Bilbie in 1747: the south porch has a groined roof and is ornamented with a profusion of niches: a very rich and elaborate screen of wood, of the same date as the fabric, separates the nave and chancel, and has been restored under the direction of F. Bligh Bond esq. F.S.B.A.: the lower portion is divided into panels containing the Apostle’s Creed, in Latin, before each article of which, as supposed to be dictated by an apostle, the painter has introduced one of the ancient prophets, or an apostle bearing a label with a text from the Old Testament, chiefly according to the old Lation version, and referring to the article: afterwards follow eight other figures of saints, including the Blessed Virgin, crowned as Queen of Martyrs, and bearing a sword: the church was greatly improved in 1866, and an addition was made to the burial ground at an expense of £2,000; the east window is stained, and there are memorial windows to Mary, wife of Col. Edward Studd, of Oxton, d. August 13th, 1853, and to the late Tom Drew esq.: a handsome brass lectern and Bible were given in 1866 by the Rev. Arthur L. Dames B.A. to commemorate the 50th year of his incumbency of this church. The carved oak pulpit is the finest in the county: the reredos is a triptych, with carved representations of scenes from the life of Christ: there are monuments to Sir Nicholas Martyn knt. temp. James I., John Rothleigh esq. of Meunobilly, 1651, Lord Lisle, 1856, and a brass to the late Lord Courtenay, d. 1898, besides others, and the church affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1694. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £276, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Philip Strong Bingham M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The great tithes are commuted at £462 10s.; £208 8s. 6d. of which is annexed to the vicarage of Starcross, £10 11s. 1d. to the vicarage of Kenton and the remainder, £243 10s. 5d. is vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The Wesleyan chapel is a building of stone, erected in 11870, and has sittings for 100 persons. A fair is held on Shrove Tuesday, but is now of little importance. The charities are of £18 yearly value; there are also four almshouses, erected by William Reginald, 12th Earl of Devon (d. 1888), occupied by aged widows, who live rent free. There are clothing and coal clubs. In the centre of the village is an enclosed green, planted with shrubs and containing a stone cross, erected by the above Earl of Devon. Oxton House is the property and residence of Edward Fairfax Studd esq. M.A., B.C.L. and High House of Lady Courtenay. The Earl of Devon is lord of the manor and chief landowner, Sir R. H. S. D. Lydston Newman bart. of Mamhead, and Edward F. Studd esq. also own land in the parish. The soil is light; subsoil, new red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,182 acres of land, 11 of water, 1 of tidal water and 288 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,866; the population in 1901 was 9,866, inclusive of Starcross. Under the provisions of the “Divided Parishes Act,” by Local Government Board Order, 16,546, the ecclesiastical district of Cofton, including Cockwood, Middlewood, Westwood, Eastdon, The Warren and Week, amounting to 739 acres, was taken from this parish and added to that of Dawlish, March 25, 1885.

Schools

A School Board of 5 members was formed Feb. g, 1875; John Martin Truelove, Powderham, clerk to the board; Henry Bazley, Starcross, attendance officer.
