Historical Description

KILMINGTON is a parish and village on the western acclivity of the Axe valley and on the Axminster and Honiton road, 1 ½ miles west-by-south from Axminster station on the London and South Western main line of railway, 7 ½ south-east from Honiton and 23 from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Giles is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1862, at a cost of £1,330, under the direction of Mr. Tialbot Bury, architect, of London, and consisting of chancel with side chapels, nave, south porch, aisles and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, and a clock presented in 1883 by Marwood Tucker esq.: the east window and six others are stained, two of these being memorials to the late William Anning esq.: in the church is a large marble monument to Thomas Southcott esq. of Dulcis, in this parish, ob. 31st December, 1715, erected in 1735 by George Southcott, of Dulcis, his eldest son; the monument bears the arms of Southcott, Holway and Fry, and has a genealogical inscription in Latin: in the south, or Coryton aisle, is a fine brass to Charles Tucker esq. of Coryton Park, who died at Marlands, Exeter, on Christmas day, 1885, and in the chancel a brass to the late Frederick Swabey esq. long resident at Coryton Park, d. 1885: the brass altar cross was presented in memory of Mrs. Bridges, of Heathfield, d. May 5, 1886: a handsome alms dish and altar vases have also been given by W. George King esq. and Mrs. King the communion plate, of silver gilt, was given by members of the Tucker family: an organ was provided in 1895 at a cost of £200: there are 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1723. The living is a parochial chapelry, annexed with Membury to the vicarage of Axminster, joint net yearly value £220, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Arthur Newman M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, who resides at Axminster. The tithe, amounting to £100, is appropriated to the prebendaries of Grindall and Warthill in York Cathedral. Here is a Baptist chapel and a small lending library. The mansion of Coryton Park, built by Benedictus Marwood Tucker, A.D. 1756, and now the property of Charles Marwood Tucker esq. J.P. is a handsome rectangular structure of brick, with stone dressings, in the Ionic style, and has a fine entrance porch surmounted by a pediment adorned with a shield of arms: the house stands in a well-wooded park of about 50 acres, and is at present occupied by Col. De Courcey Daniell. Charles Marwood Tucker esq. who is lord of the manor. Miss Anning, Major Gardiner, the Rev. Henry Buller Heberden M.A. rector of Oddington, Gloucestershire and John Impey Scarborough esq. of Colyford, are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed; the subsoil is marl. The crops are wheat, barley, roots and pasture, with some excellent dairy land. The area is 1,716 acres of land, 9 of water; rateable value, £3,667; the population in 1891 was 558.
