Historical Description

KINGSKERSWELL (or Carswell) is a parish and village, on the old road from Exeter to Torquay, with a station on the Torquay branch of the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and is miles south from Newton Abbot and 3 north-west from Torquay, in the Mid division of the county, Haytor hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a picturesque building of stone, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, separated from the nave by arcades of five arches, north and south porches and a western tower of the Late Decorated period, with a turret and containing 6 bells, of which the tenor was re-hung in 1887: over the north porch is a parvise, now used as a vestry: in the church are three recumbent effigies; the earliest (1350—1420) is that of a lady in a richly-worked head-dress and mantle, and supported by mutilated cherubs; the other two are those of a knight and lady of about the same period; the former is in bascinet with camail, and has on his tunic four fusils in fess, the arms of the Dinham family, who had a castle here adjoining the churchyard; the lady wears a coronet and a dress and mantle with rich adornments and fastenings; these effigies were placed in the window sills during the restorations in 1834 and 1874, when new windows were inserted, and are now coated with whitewash: in 1847 some portions of the ancient screen were formed into chancel seats: the north porch retains a fragment of an aumbry, and there are sedilia and a piscina in the chancel: the church was reseated in 1834, and again in 1887, and the chancel was restored in 1874 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the cost of the work carried out from 1874 to 1887 amounted to £1,220: in 1897 a window in the north aisle was restored, at a cost of £30, one in the south aisle re-opened, and the gallery removed at a further cost of about £85: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1702; marriages, from the year 1712.

The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £237, with residence (built in 1836 by the Rev. Aaron Neek) and 9 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of St. Mary Church, and held since 1889 by the Rev. George Hickson Feltrim Fagan M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. Here are Particular, Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. The Plymouth Brethren have also a place of meeting. In the parish are lima rock quarries. During the past ten years Cottage Art Schools have been held in this village, in which young men have been trained in art, handicraft and design, and many have in consequence obtained permanent employment in the Aller Vale art pottery works. Traces of the castle of the Dinham family, barons Dinham, are still to be seen near the church. Barton Hall, 1 mile cast from the village, the seat of Hercules Edwin Brown esq. J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner, was originally erected in 1840, but completely destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1862: the present house is a handsome mansion of red sandstone, standing in about 25 acres of park land and commanding beautiful sea and land views. Jacob Ley esq. of Holmleigh and Mr. John James Wale are landowners in this parish. The soil is various, principally red loam; the subsoil is a red gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, and the neighbourhood is celebrated for its cider. The area is 1,797 acres; rateable value, £7,236; the population in 1901 was 1,027.

National School (mixed), erected in 1858, at a cost of £450, for 172 children; average attendance, 180.
