Historical Description

KINGSNYMPTON is a parish and village, on the river Mole, and about a quarter of a mile west of the road from Chulmleigh to South Molton, 2 ½ miles north from South Molton Road station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, 4 ½ north from Chulmleigh, 5 south from South Molton, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Witheridge, South Molton petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of South Molton, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, vestry, south porch and a tower, with spire, containing 5 bells: one of the windows in this church formerly displayed effigies in stained glass of Sir Lewis Pollard kt. Agnes (Hext), his wife, and twenty-two children: the church, which retains a handsomely carved and interesting oak screen, was partially restored in 1892, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £440, including 96 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Hull, of Brighton, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Joseph Arthur Hull B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Bible Christian chapel in the village. Kingsnympton Park, the property of the Rev. John Vowler Tanner B.A. rector of Chawleigh and James M. Tanner esq. and occupied by Berthold Smith esq. is a short distance south-west of the village; the mansion stands in a well-wooded park of forty acres. This estate anciently belonged to Sir Lewis Pollard kt. son of Robert Pollard esq. of Way and a justice of the Common Pleas 1514—25; he is said to have inclosed the park and erected a stately mansion here. The Rev. M. H. M. Byne M.A of Seaton, who is lord of the manor, the Rev. J. V. Tanner B.A. rector of Chawleigh, James M. Tanner esq. Aaron Buckingham esq. J.P. and the trustees of the late Ven. Archdeacon C. W. Furse M.A. (d. 1900) are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of the parish is 5,454 acres of land and 32 of water; rateable value, £4,002; the population in 1901 was 502.

School (mixed), for 150 children; average attendance, 80; endowed by the late John Buller esq.; the sum now realized as interest from the money invested in Consols is about £13 yearly.
