Historical Description

KINGSTEIGNTON (or Teignton Regis) is a parish and large village, on the river reign and at the junction of the roads from Exeter to Newton Abbot and Teignmouth to Newton Abbot, 1 ½ miles north from Newton Abbot station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 14 south-by-west from Exeter, 4 ½ west from Teignmouth and 8 north-west from Torquay, in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred and petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. A clear stream of water runs through the village and churchyard, issuing from an extensive limestone rock at Rydon, a short distance from the village, and is used for working three flour mills in the village, as well as for domestic purposes. There are two canals from the reign, used for the conveyance of clay from this place to the port of Teignmouth; one of these, the Stover canal, made by the Templer family during the latter part of the last century, and extending a distance of about 2 miles to Teigngrace, now belongs to the Great Western Railway Company; the other, the Hackney canal, about a mile in length, belongs to Lord Clifford, of Chudleigh, and extends to the village. The church of St. Michael is a fine old building of red sandstone, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, separated from the nave by arcades of five arches, south porch and an embattled western tower 82 feet in height, containing a clock and 6 bells, dated respectively 1766, 1774. 1726, 1623, 1746 and 1870: there is a piscina in the chancel and one at the east end of each aisle: the priest’s doorway also remains, and on the north side is an external projection which contained the stairs to the rood loft: the font and south doorway date from the 14th century: the stained east window is a memorial to the late vicar, and there is one to Major Marshall, erected in 1873, and another to the Smaldridge family in 1889: in the church are inscribed memorials to Nicholas Downing, vicar, ob. 27 March, 1666; Richard Adlam, vicar, ob. 1 November, 1676; Richard Carpenter, vicar, ob. 10 September, 1697; and Christopher Beeke, vicar, 1737—98: and to the Clifford, Hele, Horwell and Yarde families: there is also a brass to the Rev. John H. Hext, late vicar, d. 1878: a number of chained books, including a copy of Fox’s “Book of Martyrs,” are preserved here: portions of the screen, finely painted and gilt in, in 1848, are preserved at the vicarage house: the church was restored in 1865, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1670, and is perfect from that date to the present time. The parish chest contains a complete list of the vicars of this parish from the year 1262. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £225, including 20 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Percival Jackson M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1879, and the Congregational chapel in 1815. The charities, averaging £12 yearly, are equally divided between the church, the schools and the poor. There are also two clothing clubs and a meat kitchen for the poor. Theophilus Gale M.A. fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, an eminent Nonconformist divine and writer, son of a vicar of this parish, was born here in 1628, and died at Newington, London, in March, 1678. The parish is noted for its pipe and potters’ clay, of which large quantities are sent annually to different parts of the kingdom for tobacco-pipe making and the use of potters. Messrs. Hexter, Humpherson and Co. employ a large number of hands at their potteries: the largest clay works here are those of Messrsr. Watts, Blake, Bearne and Co. and Messrs. Whiteway and Co. At Rydon, in this parish, are limestone quarries, the stone from which is extensively used for church building purposes. The manor of Preston, with the great tithes in this parish, originally belonged to the cathedral church of Salisbury, and was attached to one of its prebends designated the “golden prebend”; it is now vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Teignbridge House, the residence of Francis Hy. Plumptre esq. J.P. is about a mile west of the village, and stands in about 5 acres of land. Lord Clifford of Chudleigh, who is lord of the manor, William Henry Whiteway Wilkinson esq. the Rev. Thomas John Yarde B.A. of Chudleigh. the trustees of the late Rev. Nicholas Watts. Mrs. Pidsley, of Knowles hill, Newton Abbot, Francis Henry Plumptre esq. the trustees of William Satterley Bawdon esq. and Miss Whidborne are chief landowners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is lime rock, excepting in the valley by the reign, which is alluvial, and under the latter soil the channels of pipe and potters clay run. The chief crops are grain, mangold wurtzel and turnips. The area is 3,945 acres of land, 30 of water, 5 of tidal water and 63 of foreshore; rateable value £12,107; the population in 1891 was 1,808 in the civil, and 1,705 in the ecclesiastical parish, and 1,942 in the civil parish in 1901.
