Historical Description

KINGSWEAR is a parish and village, on a point of land projecting into the river Dart, opposite Dartmouth, 4 ½ miles west from Brixham, 10 ½ west from Torquay and 228 ½ from London, in the Torquay division of the county, hundred of Haytor, petty sessional division of Paignton, union and county court district of Totnes, rural deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. Here is the terminal station of the branch line from Newton Abbot, on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and steamboats in connection with the trains cross the estuary of the Dart to Dartmouth. The village is supplied with water from a system carried out under the direction of Mr. E. Appleton C.E. The church of St. Thomas a Becket, rebuilt with the exception of the tower in 1847, at a cost of £1,600, is a building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells; the two first have inscriptions and initials only; a third is dated 1680; one bell was sold in 1767 to buy a clock: the stained east window was erected in 1880 by public subscription, as a memorial to the Rev. John Smart, for 44 years vicar of this parish; a window on the north side was erected by Llewellyn Llewellyn esq. in 1882, in memory of his son Charles. The register dates from the year 1601. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £114, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Frederick Walker Th. Assoc. K.C.L. There is a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1869. A Cemetery of 1 ½ acres, in Brixham road, was formed in 1885, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The Club house of the Royal Dart Yacht Club, established in 1866, was erected from designs by Mr. E. Appleton C.E. and opened in June, 1881, and is pleasantly situated on the banks of the Dart. Above Kingswear, on the top of the hill, are the remains of Fort Ridley, which Sir Henry Cary defended at the siege of Dartmouth in January, 1645, by the parliamentary forces under General Fairfax. Kingswear Castle, on the Kingswear side of the Dart, a little beyond Dartmouth Castle, standing on the rocks and washed by the sea, is an ancient rectangular pile, said to date from the time of King John, and is the property and residence of the Right Hon. Charles Seale-Hayne P.C., M.P., J.P. On the side of the declivity which descends to the sea, opposite Dartmouth Castle, is Brookhill, the seat of Robert Francis Wilkins esq.: the wainscoting and ceiling of the diningroom illustrate by emblazoned shields and inscriptions the history of the county and locality, and it has a finely carved chimneypiece, depicting the story of three Hebrew children: in a wood close to Brookhill may still be seen, a little above the water’s edge, the remains of an old guardhouse, and the hollow in the rock through which the chain passed to the castle opposite, and which used to be stretched across the mouth of the harbour to prevent the entrance of enemies’ ships. Llewellyn Llewellyn esq. J.P. who is lay impropriator of the great tithe of this parish and also of Brixham and Churston Ferrers, has a seat called Nethway, in Brixham parish, about a mile and a half from Kingswear. The soil is light; subsoil, shale. The parish contains 97 acres of land and 16 of foreshore; assessable value, £3,103; the population in 1891 was 850.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Feb. 4, 1881; George A. Casey, Kingswear, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1871, at the charge of G. F. Luttrell esq. of Dunster Castle, Somerset, for 125 children & enlarged in 1891, for 190 children; average attendance, 156.
