Historical Description

LAMERTON, in Domesday “Lambertone,” is a village and scattered parish, watered by the river Lamber, from which its name is derived, and is on the road from Tavistock to Launceston; it is 3 miles north-west from Tavistock station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 18 north from Plymouth and 10 south-east from Launceston, in the western division of the county, hundred of Lifton, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Tavistock, rural deanery of Tavistock, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The hamlet of North Brentor, formerly part of this parish, was added to Brentor, Sept. 10, 1883, for ecclesiastical purposes, and civilly by Local Government Board Order 15,033, March 25, 1885. The church of St. Peter is a large building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with remains of crocketed pinnacles rising from embattled turrets and an octagonal stair turret on the north side, and containing 6 bells: the stained west window was erected by Thomas Weekes, of Lamerton and Tavistock, to his wife and daughter, and in the chancel is an ancient monument to the Tremayne family, erected in 1588 by Digory Tremayne; it has effigies of his five brothers and a long inscription in verse: the monument, which was injured by the fire, has been restored, together with another memorial of the family, by the late John Tremayne esq. of Marystowe: the church plate includes a chalice dated 1576, the cover forming a paten, and an ancient paten: the alms-box of wood has a piece of inserted silver, bearing the date 1752: the church, which has been thoroughly restored in 1876 at a cost of £1,600 and re-opened 20th July in that year, was entirely burnt down on the night of Monday, Nov. 19th, 1877: the stonework of the tower remains intact, but the rest of the church, except the most easterly window on the south side, is wholly new, having been rebuilt in 1879—80 at a cost of £6,007, and re-opened Jan. 29 in the latter year, when an organ was provided: the church has 325 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1547; burials, 1549; marriages, 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £264, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of J. C. L. Tremayne esq. of Heligan, St. Austell, and held since 1889 by the Rev. John Henry Bidlake Wollocombe M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There are two Wesleyan chapels and a Bible Christian chapel. A Cemetery of one acre was formed in 1881, and is under the control of the Parish Council. Here is a Reading Room, erected by the Rev. J. H. B. and Mrs. Wollocombe on a site presented by Viscount Ebrington, and opened Jan. 1st 1900. Several mines have at various times been opened in this parish, but met with little success.
