Historical Description

LANDKEY is a village and parish on a tributary of the river Taw, 2 ½ miles east-south-east from Barnstaple stations on the London and South Western and Great Western railways, in the North Western division of the county, South Molton hundred, Braunton petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county district, rural deanery of Sherwill, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Paul is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, north and south chapels, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast in 1788 from a previous peal of four: in the church are recumbent effigies in stone of the 12th or 13th centuries, discovered during the restoration of the church in 1870; one having been built up in the wall where it was placed, and the other two concealed beneath the pews; two of these are figures of ladies, in wimples and flowing dresses, one wearing a long mantle; the other effigy is that of a cross-legged knight; they are conjectured to represent members of the Acland or Beaupell families, both which had possessions here; there is also a monument with life-size figures to Sir Arthur Acland, ob. 1610, and Elynor, his wife, ob. 1645: in the south chapel is a stained window and a hagioscope; the east window and one in the nave are also stained: the font is octagonal and probably of the 15th century: there are 204 sittings. The register dates from the year 1602. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £310, including 35 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1901 by the Rev. James Furneaux Powning M.A. of Cambridge University. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1862, and one for Bible Christians, built in 1865. There are charities of about £110 yearly value. Willesleigh, the property of William Gage Hodge esq. is now the residence of Lady Clark. Acland Barton, now a farmhouse, is the property of Sir Charles T. D. Acland bart. and was the original seat of his family. The Hon. Mark G. K. Rolle is lord of the manor, once held by the Dennys. Sir C. T. D. Acland bart. the Duke of Bedford, T. J. Dennis esq. Henry Law esq. William Gage Hodge esq. of Glazebrook House, South Brent, William Thorne Buckingham esq. and Albert Edward Kemp Thome esq. of Penzance are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,183 acres; assessable value, £2,943; the population in 1901 was 621.
