Historical Description

LAPFORD is a parish and village on the river Yeo, and on the road from Crediton to Chulmleigh, with a station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 5 miles south-east from Chulmleigh, 9 north-west from Crediton, 17 north-west from Exeter and 189 ½ from London, in the Northern division of the county, North Tawton hundred, Crediton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Chulmleigh, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Thomas a Becket is a building of stone, partly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, restored in 1882 and containing 6 bells: on the south side is a memorial window to Christopher Rogers Kelland esq. of Loosbeare Manor and Bow, who died in 1852, and to Anna Maria, his wife, and one on the south side, inserted in 1887 by W. H. Kelland esq. to Mrs. Kelland, wife of John Kelland esq. d. 1858; the pulpit was given is 1881 by W. H. Kelland esq.: there is a very fine rood screen of the 16th century, groined on both sides and richly carved; and a parclose screen of plainer character separating the chancel from its aisle: the oak benches data from the same period; the church was further restored in 1888, when new buttresses were added to the north aisle, the roofs renewed, heating apparatus fixed and other improvements effected by Mr. Harry Hems, under the direction of Messrs. Packham, Croote and Stuart, architects, of Exeter; during the progress of the work a statuette in oak of St. John the Evangelist was met with: a memorial brass to the late J. F. Skipper B.A. d. 1883, was at the same time placed by W. H. Kelland esq.: the total cost of the different restorations from 1879 to 1891 amounted to £1,152: the stained east window was inserted in March, 1889, to John Kelland esq. of Kelland, De Bathe and Exbourne, who died 1859, and his son, John Kelland esq. d. 1862: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1567; burials, 1570. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £376, including 158 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Vicars M.A. vicar of Calbourne, I. of Wight, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Cornelius William Wilson M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel. In 1778 Philip Kelland, of this parish, left a rent-charge of 20s. a year to the vicar and churchwardens to be distributed yearly in bread; this charity, which had lapsed, has been, with some others, revived by W. H. Kelland esq. Several of the farmhouses in this parish afford good examples of the domestic architecture of the Elizabethan age. The chief manor, formerly a part of the honor of Torrington, passed to St. John Arundell, of Trezise and Bagot, and after to the Radfords, and has been dismembered: the lesser manor was known as “Court Manor,” and was formerly the property of Philip Kelland esq. who bequeathed it to the late P. Saunder, and of which manor Edwin Troake Saunder esq. is now lord and also owner of Lapford Court, now a farmhouse, renamed Court Barton: the Saunder family is of ancient repute here, the Rev. Christopher Saunder having been rector 1515—1567. Kelland, in this parish, now (1901) the property of William Ford esq. of Devonport, was the original seat of the ancient family of Kelland, who have possessed land here since 1567 without a break in the male line, and several of whom were sheriffs of the county and members of Parliament in the 17th century; William Henry Kelland esq. is the present representative. The Stone family had property here for generations until 1778, when it came by purchase to the Kellands. Bury Barton, originally the seat of the Bury family, was purchased in 1877 by the present owner, Mr. Roger Densham, whose family occupied it as tenants for several generations: the arms of the Bury family still remain in plaster over the mantel in the drawing room: on the farm is an ancient Catholic chapel, dating from 1434, and now used as part of the farm buildings. Bowerthy, 234 acres in extent, the property until 1828 of the late Philip Kelland esq. now belongs to the Earl of Portsmouth. Lapford Wood, the residence of the Rev. Charles Henry Gerald Vivian B.A. Pennycotts was purchased in 1613 from Sir Edward Seymour; in 1788 it was sold by Rev. Samuel Stone to Richard Kelland esq. of Lapford, and it is now the property of James George Kelland esq. of Barnstaple. The land is nearly all freehold, except a small portion in the manor of Loosbeare. The Mill House was anciently the seat of the Gater family, who were seated here and in Morchard Bishop adjoining from 1434 to 1820: their property in this parish was sold to the Crootes. The principal landowners are the Earl of Portsmouth, George Croote esq. William Ford esq. of Devonport, J. G. Kelland esq. of Batnstaple, William Clarke esq. Miss Hitchcock, Rev. C. H. G. Vivian B.A. of Lapford Wood, Mr. Roger Densham, Rev. W. Densham, of Wareham, Dorset, Edwin Troake Saunder esq. of West Ashford, Heanton Punchardon, Richard Tucker esq. Mr. Buckingham, of King’s Nympton, and the rector; there are also several small freeholders.

The soil of Lapford is skillett and clay; the subsoil is the same. The west of the parish, containing some dun land, is remarkably fertile; the east is moorland and of inferior soil. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,568 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £3,313; the population in 1901 was 511.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov. 24, 1873, for the united district of Lapford & Nymet Rowland; the Rev. C. W. Wilson M.A. is chairman of & clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built about 1863, for 120 children; average attendance, 82.
