Historical Description

LITTLE TORRINGTON is a parish and village, near the river Torridge, which is reached by two bridges of 3 arches, each leading to Great Torrington, and is 3 miles south from Torrington terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, Shebbear hundred, Torrington petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Giles is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, 67 feet in height, containing 5 bells, all dated 1804; weight of tenor, 11 cwt.: there is an ancient brass to Jone, wife of Peter Phesaynt esq. attorney-general in the Northern parts to Queen Elizabeth, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Vincent Fulnetbie, and mother-in-law to John Phippes D.D. rector of Little Torririgton; and modern brasses to Walter Stuart Stevens Haworth, lieut. 60th Rifles, who died 13th Feb. 1881, at Newcastle, Natal, of wounds received in the battle of Ingogo, February 4th preceding; to Capt. John Stevens Guille, d. 1887, and to Lieut. Basil Eric Cummings, who died of enteric fever at Deelfontein, South Africa, 9 May, 1900 and Major H. S. Le M. Guille R, A. who died of wounds 9 May, 1900, while in action at Warrenton, South Africa; and there are others to two sons of Capt. Scott of “Smytham,” one of whom met his death by an unfortunate mistake of a sentry at Esquimalt, British Columbia: in the church are also memorials to R. Coplestone esq. of Woodlands, in this parish, ob. Oct. 23rd, 1617; the Rev. Peter Fisher, rector, Jane, his wife, and John Fisher; and to the Rev. Peter Glubb, rector here nearly 50 years, 1852; and Anne, his wife: there is an ancient stone font and three stained windows: an organ was erected in 1887, at a cost of £125: with the exception of the tower, porch and part of the west wall, the edifice was partially rebuilt in 1857, when the chancel was enlarged and the Stevens aisle rebuilt by Mrs. Sophia Stevens, widow of Thomas Stevens esq. of Cross, Vielstone and Winscott: the nave and south aisle were restored by the parishioners: the chancel has since been decorated, a new Holy table provided and an alabaster and oak reredos erected, the whole forming a memorial to the late Rev. George de Carteret Guille, rector here 1853—94, and to his wife: the silver flagon, paten and almsdish were given in 1753 by Christiana Maria, widow of Henry Stevens esq. of Cross, and sister of Henry, 1st Baron Rolle; the chalice is of older date: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory, neb yearly value £330, with residence and 44 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas MacClelland B.D. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Five Lane End. Cross, the residence of Lt.-Col. Richard Arthur Moore-Stevens M.A., J.P. is the property of the Rev. Hubert George da Carteret Stevens-Guille M.A. and Smytham, the residence of Capt. Osmund W. Scott, is the property of Mrs. Ffolkes. The Rev. H. G. de C. Stevens-Guille, who owns the manor, Mrs. Ffolkes, the Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle and J. C. Moore-Stevens esq. of Winscott, are chief landowners. The soil is friable; subsoil, stone and clay. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 3,112 acres of land and 28 of water; rateable value, £2,669; the population in 1901 was 407.

The hospital of St. Mary Magdalen, founded here about the 13th century, was given in 1665 by Tristram Arscott esq. to Great Torrington and the churchwardens of Little Torrington for the relief of the poor, and the lands now known as “Magdalen Lands” were anciently part of the endowment of this hospital, which was originally a lazar-house, or asylum for lepers; these lands now consist of two fields, comprising 8 acres, several gardens and 13 cottages, let for about £34 yearly.

The chapel of St. Mary Magdalen, formerly attached to the hospital, was founded by the ancestors of John Sentleger (St. Leger) in 1345, and is a small building about 30 feet in length by 11 feet wide, with a transept, and a western tower 5 feet square, containing one bell, dated 1654: a new east window has been placed in the chapel, but one of the old windows with wooden tracery lingers still. Divine service is held here once or twice on Sundays. There is an endowment towards the maintenance of the chapel and its services of £12 5s. per annum, this endowment forming a part of the Magdalen charity, the residue of which is distributed among the poor of Great and Little Torrington.

Hart’s charity of £7 is distributed to the poor at Christmas by four trustees.
