Historical Description

LITTLEHAM (near Bideford) is a parish, 2 ½ miles south-west from Bideford station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Shebbear hundred, Bideford petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Swithin is an ancient building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 4 bells (two dated 1692 and 1731 have been re-hung); the church was partially restored in 1847: in 1892 a faculty was granted by the Bishop of Exeter for the restoration of the church: an interesting painting of St. Swithin, probably dating from the 12th century, was discovered on the north wall, and portions of the old rood screen were also met with; the ancient screen has been restored from designs by Mr. Temple Moore, of London, who also designed the large monument to General Crealock C.B., C.M.G.: the old rood loft stairs remain: the old benches have been incorporated in the new seats, and the chancel floor has been laid with marble: the church was re-opened 31 May, 1893, and affords 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £75, including 84 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1901 by Rev. Geoffrey Barrington Simeon M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. The charities are of about 23s. yearly value. The manor belonged at an early period to the Stapledons, and subsequently to the Botelers or Butlers, Earls of Ormond, from whom it descended to the families of St. Leger and Leigh; it was purchased in 1872 by the late Sir George Stucley Stucley bart. Lieut.-Col. Sir W. L. Stucley Stucley bart. D.L., J.P. of Hartland Abbey, who is lord of the manor, and Major James Morrison Kirkwood, of Yeo Vale, are the principal landowners. The parish is finely wooded and the land is very fertile. The subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The acreage is 1,321; rateable value, £1,453; the population in 1901 was 302.

A School Board of 5 members for the Littleham & Landcross united district was formed Oct. 1st,1877; James S. B. Braund, Old town, Bideford, clerk to the board; George Sanders, 1 Model terrace, Bideford, attendance officer.
