Historical Description
LITTLE HEMPSTON, or Hempston Arundel, is a small village and parish, pleasantly seated in a valley opening to the river Dart, and adjoining the road from Newton Abbot to Totnes and Plymouth, 2 miles north-east from Totnes station on the main line of the Great Western railway, which passes through the village, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Hayter, petty sessional division of Stanborough and Coleridge, Totnes union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The river Hems, which rises in the parish of Woodland, flows through the village, where it is joined by another stream, originating in Marldon, the united currents entering the Dart near Hempston. The church of St. John the Baptist, rebuilt in 1439, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch with battlemented parvise and an embattled western tower with octagonal turret containing 5 bells, the first dated 1847, the second and fifth, 1700; the remaining two are early bells, with legends in Old English characters: the chancel retains a piscina with shelf and a priest’s doorway: in the church are two ancient monuments, one of which bears the cross-legged effigy of a knight in plate armour, covered by a tunic, wearing bascinet with camail, and bearing a shield suspended by a strap; alongside is the effigy of a lady in flowing robe with mantle; these figures date from 1310 to 1350: the other tomb has a fine and more perfect effigy of a knight in plate armour, but without shield, dating from 1350 to 1420; two of these represent members of the Arundel family, and the other Sir Thomas Crispin: on the south wall is a tablet to Charles Cornish, of Gatcombe, d. 19 May, 1818, Charles James Cornish, his son, lieutenant 16th Lancers, d. 1833, and Frederick William Cornish, his second son, captain Bengal Artillery, d. 20 May, 1851: there is a fine carved rood-screen of Perpendicular date, the cornice of which is delicately carved with foliage, clusters of grapes and birds; the upper stage is filled with tracery, and the lower portion is panelled; both this and the parclose screens are in good condition: the stairs to the rood loft also remain: the font, of red sandstone, has an octagonal basin on a square base: the north window of the chancel, repaired in 1864, contains ancient stained glass, originally belonging to Marldon church, comprising various figures, fragments of canopies and heraldic shields and parts of an invocatory inscription to St. Peter, and there are other stained windows: the church was restored in 1863—4. In the churchyard is a large yew tree. The register of marriages dates from the year 1539; baptisms, 1645; burials, 1546. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £168, including 58 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1886 by the Rev. William Dunstan Rundle LL.M, of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The charities consist of £138, left to the poor by Christopher Blackhall and other donors, and laid out in 1727 in the purchase of Dreadon Close, a piece of land 10 acres in extent, now let for about £13 a year; the poor parishioners have also a yearly rent-charge of £9 5s. 6d. out of the great tithes of Berry Pomeroy, left by William Bogan in 1723, and likewise the dividends of £111 2s. 3d. Old South Sea Annuities, purchased in 1744 with the arrears of this rent-charge. Gatcombe House, rebuilt by the late C. Cornish esq. was the birth-place, in 1625, of Zachary Bogan M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford, a learned divine, who published treatises on the idioms of Homer and Hesiod, and a Comparison of Homer with the Sacred Scriptures; he died in 1659. Buckyeat, or Bokeyt, in this parish, was the seat, early in the 14th century, of the Bokeyett family, whose heiress married one of the Huckmores, and at the end of the century this family was resident here. The Village Hall, erected in 1882, is used on Sundays for religious services and during the week for secular purposes. The old Parsonage, now a farm-house, is a small but curious mansion of the 14th century, occupying a secluded site, surrounded by ash trees and approached by an avenue of wych elms; the house is built round an open courtyard, the principal entrance being on the south-east: to the right of this is the hall, lighted by a large trefoil-headed window and retaining portions of a screen of panelled oak, bearing traces of colour; a newel stair leads to the upper floor, which contains a large withdrawing-room, 24 by 18 feet. The manor was held by the Arundels from the time of Henry I. and subsequently descended by intermarriages to the families of Crispin, Stretch, Cheney and Willoughby. The trustees of the late Duchess of Cleveland (d. 1900), who are owners of the manorial rights, John: Hitchin Bain esq. J.P. of Gatcombe, Bowden esq. and the Trist trustees are the chief landowners. The soil is limestone; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The parish contains 1,221 acres of land, 12 of water, 10 of tidal water and 3 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,513; the population in 1891 was 215.
