Historical Description

Luppit is a little hamlet, which also lies on the left hand; here is a small Dissenting place of worship, over which Dr. William Harris, well known as a biographer, presided many years. His Lives are written in the manner of Bayle, and have this peculiarity, viz. that the notes are considerably more bulky than the text. As books of reference, such works are very useful; every assertion is established by its proper authorities, and a great number of anecdotes are generally introduced, which an historian, writing in the common way, would omit. Dr. Harris in this manner wrote Memoirs of James I., Charles I., Oliver Cromwell, Hugh Peters, and Charles II.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LUPPITT is a village and parish, intersected by a small tributary of the river Otter, 5 miles north from Honiton station, on the London and South Western railway, 11 south-east from Wellington, 14 south from Taunton and 20 north-east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient cruciform building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a western tower containing 4 bells: it has a very ancient cradle roof of oak, supported at the intersection of the transepts by massive ribs of oak, which, crossing the nave diagonally, meet in a fine boss in the centre and form two horse-shoe arches, resting on stone pillars at the four angles: in rebuilding the chancel, earthen jars, said to be for acoustic purposes, and commonly placed in buildings between the 13th and 15th centuries, were found in the walls: some remains of an Early Norman piscina, which had been cut in order to form a buttress corbel, were also met with: in the north wall of the chancel is a tomb with niches and rich tabernacle work under an open foliaged arch, said to be that of Sir John Carew, ob. 1320: it once bore some fine brasses, now missing: in the south transept is a stone inscribed to Joan (Bevyle), wife of William Wenard, supposed to be identical with William Wynard, recorder of Exeter, in 1404, and founder of “God’s House” in that city: there is also an interesting font of Early Norman or Saxon date: the two stone screens formerly here, viz. the chancel screen, and one enclosing the north transept, have been broken up, and fragments of both are now incorporated in the mantel pieces of houses adjoining: the church was restored during 1885—90, at a cost of £1,280, and affords sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1710 and is much mutilated. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £93, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Col. C. W. H. Helyar (d. 1900), and held since 1880 by the Rev. William Thomas Perrott, of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The view from Dumpdon Hill, a well-formed British encampment in this parish, is extensive and beautiful. There is also a fine range of hills called “Hartridge.” There are some remains here of an ancient mansion of the Mohun family, barons Mohun, including the gateway, adorned with some fine carving. Arthur Francis Bernard esq. of Combe Raleigh, who is lord of the manor, George Potter Blake esq. the trustees of the late Col. C. W. H. Helyar (d. 1900), Mrs. E. Helyar, Rev. W. H. Helyar B.A. rector of Sutton Bingham, Somerset, and Mrs. Simcoe, of Wolford Lodge, are the chief landowners. H. N. Pope esq. steward of the manor, holds a yearly Court Leet at the Luppitt inn. The soil is various; subsoil, marl. The crops are chiefly grass, with some wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 5,072 acres; rateable value, £4,855; the population in 1901 was 467.

National School (mixed), erected, with teachers’ residence, in 1873, at a cost of about £900, for 120 children; average attendance, 73.
