Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LYMPSTONE is a parish and village pleasantly seated on the eastern bank of the broad estuary of the Exe, with a station on the Exmouth branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 7 ½ miles south-south-east from Exeter, 3 ½ south-south-east from Topsham, 2 ½ north from Exmouth and 180 from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, petty sessional division of Woodbury, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of red sandstone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, dating from 1409, and containing a dock and 5 bells, all cast in 1746, and the third recast in 1887: in 1864 the old structure, being much dilapidated, was, with the exception of the tower, rebuilt and a north aisle added; the interior of the tower was restored, and a clock chiming the quarters erected in 1884 at a cost of £266, and the tower was again restored in 1896: there are memorial windows in the south aisle to William Henry Wright, d. May 16, 1867, and to Mary Jane, wife of W. H. Peters esq. J.P. d. Nov. 3, 1884; and others to Frances Lucy Peters, daughter of the above, d. May 17, 1854, Mary Ann and Catherine Shirreff, d. 1884, Dr. Shirreff, d. 1886, Major and Mrs. Octavius Marshall, d. 1889, and Capt. and Mrs. Macdonald, d. 1847 and 1849: a new organ chamber and vestry were erected in 1889 at a cost of over £500, and a new organ was provided in 1893, at a cost of £468: there are 510 sittings. The register dates from May, 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £250, with about 13 acres of glebe and house, in the gift of the Rev. C. D. E. Malet, vicar of Cannington, Somerset, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Charles Gordon Browne M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford: attached to the living is a rectorial manor, the lands of which are leased out for lives, and held under the rector as lord; on the expiration of the leases the value of the living will be considerably augmented, as, by an Act of Parliament passed in 1861, the rack rents wall then revert to the living. The Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1883 at a cost of about £850, is a neat building of limestone with Bath stone dressings in the Gothic style, and will seat 280 persons. The parish charities amount to about £60 yearly, and are expended upon the National and Sunday schools and the deserving poor. Near the beach is a square tower with weather vane, containing a clock with two dials, erected in 1885 at a cost of about £1,000, by W. H. Peters esq. of Harefield, in memory of his wife Mary Jane, and to commemorate her kindness to and sympathy for the poor of Lympstone; from the top magnificent views of the surrounding country can be obtained.
