Historical Description

MALBOROUGH is a parish pleasantly situated on one of the highest points of the county, commanding an extensive prospect and bounded on the south by the open sea between Bolt Head and Bolt Tail, and is 3 ½ miles south-west from Kingsbridge station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Southern division of the county, Stanborough hundred, Stanborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, Kingsbridge union and county court district, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The seaport of Salcombe, formerly included in this parish, has now become a separate parish under section one, sub-section three of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). The church of All Saints is an interesting edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with spire containing 6 bells, of greater antiquity than the rest of the church: the spire, which has been twice struck by lightning, can be seen at a great distance on account of its elevated position: there is a very curious old font, a piscina and a stoup: the east window is a memorial to Andrew Pinwill esq.: another stained window, in the south aisle, was given anonymously: there are memorials in the church and churchyard to persons lost at sea off the coast of this parish and also a marble monument to John Stapleton, 28th baron Kingsale, d. Jan. 7, 1847: the church was restored and reseated in 1870, at a cost of £2,500, and has 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1640. The living is a vicarage, with South Huish annexed, net yearly value £190, with residence and one acre of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Sarum, and held since 1877 by the Rev. William Thomas Keeling M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The Baptist chapel was erected in 1815, and enlarged and repaired in 1872, when a new school room was added. There is also a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at Inner Hope Cove. The reading room was given to the parish by Mr. Mildmay, and is managed by the vicar. The charities amount to £150 yearly, derived from the rents of lands bequeathed by Richard Dyer and Mrs. Alice Bayning, half of which is appropriated to the repairs of the church: the other half is under the management of the trustees of the Poors’ Land Charity. Ilton Castle, now a farm-house, was built as a fortified mansion by Sir John Chiverston in 1335: the Courtenays, in right of their estates here, formerly held Admiralty Courts at the maritime villages within the different manors. Captain James Stevenson Twysden R.N. of Murston, Kingsbridge, the trustees of the late Mr. J. Ford, of Plymouth, and R. Heriot esq. of Salcombe, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and roots. The area is 5,090 acres of land and 245 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,291; the population in 1901 was 564.

National School (mixed), is a handsome building of stone, erected in 1873, at a cost of £800, for 130 children; average attendance, 103.
