Historical Description
MANATON is a parish and village, standing high upon Dartmoor, and is 4 ½ miles north-west from Bovey Tracey station on the Moreton Hampstead branch of the Great Western railway, 10 north-west from Newton Abbot and 4 south from Moreton Hampstead, in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred and petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union and county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Winifred is an ancient building of granite in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, three aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the porch is vaulted and has a parvise over, and crossing the interior from north to south is a fine traceried screen of carved oak of the early part of the 15th century, with a coved canopy, deep frieze, and open cresting: it was restored in 1893, under the direction of Mr. Sedding, architect, of Plymouth, and is now one of the most interesting in the country: a staircase to the rood screen was constructed in 1900: in 1897 new choir-stalls were provided: the stained east window is a memorial to Miss Vavasour, and there are two others to the Rev. William Carwithen D.D.: the south east porch was erected in 1896: in 1897 a new organ was provided, and a reredos presented by Mrs. Ffrench, in memory of the Ffrench family; it was designed by Mr. George Prynne, and the panels were painted by Mr. Edward Prynne: a new brass lectern was presented in 1900 by the rector and his wife, in memory of Miss Sweetland, who died in 1899: on the 13th December, 1779, during a thunderstorm, the east end of the church was much damaged, as well as the altar-piece; the south side of the tower was split from the top to within a few feet of the bottom, and one of the pinnacles fell through the roof: the church was restored and entirely restated during the period 1874—91, at a cost of £530, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £160, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. and held since 1894 by the Rev. John Charles Burch Sanders, of Oxford University and St. Aidans. The Parish Room, erected in 1898, in the rectory grounds, is used as a Sunday school and for entertainments. There is a Wesleyan chapel. In the Hound-tor Valley is a cascade called “Becky Fall,” descending 70 feet over the granite rocks, and among the crags opposite the village is a rock called “Bowermans,” more than 40 feet in height and having the appearance of a gigantic human figure, in a seated posture. Hound-tor, a remarkable pile of huge rocks, and Horsham Steps, a bed of huge detached rocks, beneath which the little river Bovey loses itself for several hundred feet, are also in this parish. At the western end of the parish is a circle, called “Grimspound,” from about 450 to 500 feet in diameter, formed of stones, several of which are of great size; within are several smaller circles, about 10 feet in diameter; most of the stones are now prostrate, but the circles can be easily traced. The Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. the Rev. Prebendary Richard Robbins Wolfe M.A. of Arthington, Mrs. Ffrench, John Kitson esq. Thomas Foster Barham esq. Robert Earle esq. W. R. Cookson esq. of Binfield, Berks, John Eveleigh Farmer esq. James Bryant, Albert and Robert Nosworthy esqrs. and Mrs. May are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and the subsoil is granitic. The chief crops are barley, oats and some pasture land. The area is 6,414 acres of land, including 2,000 of commons and waste and 8 of water; rateable value, £2,445; the population in 1901 was 315.
