Historical Description

MARLDON is a parish and village about 2 miles north-west from Paignton station on the Torbay and Dartmouth branch of the Great Western railway, 5 miles east-north-east from Totnes, 3 west from Torquay and 5 south from Newton Abbot, in the Torquay division of the county, hundred of Haytor, petty sessional division of Paignton, union and county court district of Totnes, rural deanery-of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes, and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice of dressed stone in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, three chapels, nave, aisles, south porch with a priest’s room above, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, of which the first was broken in 1862 and recast in 1885; the second and fourth date from 1636; the third, a mediaeval bell, is inscribed “Sit nomen Domini benedictum”; the fifth was cast in 1639: the church is said to have been erected by the ancient family of Gilbert, of Compton Castle, whose arms, with those of the family of Compton, are emblazoned in the windows: and there are several monuments to the Gilberts, De la Poles, Comptons, Templers, Bartletts, Bishops and Eastleys: in the church is the mutilated stone effigy of a knight in armour, bare-headed, and once attached to the stone screen formerly existing in the church: it is believed to represent Otho Gilbert, sheriff of the county in 1476; the steps and doors of the rood loft remain, and each of the chapels retains a piscina: there are stained windows to Mr. Garratt, of Parkfield, to William Henry Browse, and to the wife of the Rev. J. M. de Ludbroke Bartlet, of Ludbrook Manor, Devon: the church was partially restored in 1862, under the direction of Mr. Wm. White F.S.A, architect, and the restoration was completed in 1889 by Mr. R. M. Fulford, architect, at a cost of £2,000: there are sittings for 250 persons. The registers date from the year 1598. The living is a chapelry annexed to the vicarage of Paignton, joint net yearly value £400, in the gift of J. G. E. Templer esq. of Lindridge, and the Earl of Iddesleigh, the former having two, and the latter one presentation, and held since 1892 by the Rev. John Treiawny Ross D.D. of Trinity College, Dublin, rural dean of Ipplepen and surrogate, who resides at Paignton. The Congregational chapel is a plain rectangular edifice of grey stone, built in 1864 and holding 150 persons. There is a Baptist chapel at Compton. There are charities of 3 ½ acres of land producing £4 yearly, given by an unknown donor for the benefit of the poor, and 6s. 8d. from Kelly’s gift, yearly; the proceeds of both these gifts are distributed among the poor by trustees appointed by the Parish Council at their discretion, in sums varying from 1s. to 5 s. Compton Castle, the property of Cecil Edward Bewes esq. situated in the hamlet of Compton, within this parish, was anciently a seat of the Pole family, and in the reign of Henry II. was held by Sir Maurice de la Pole; the existing structure is supposed to have been erected in the early part of the 15th century; the buildings originally surrounded a quadrangle, and the north front, with its embattled tower and ancient gateway and the dilapidated ivy-covered walls, remain: in the floor of the room over the gateway on the east side is an oblong opening of some size: there is also a subterranean passage (supposed to have now fallen in) for a short way towards Berry Pomeroy Castle; north of the main entrance was a chapel, retaining a hagioscope and piscina. At the time of Domesday Survey, Compton was held by Stephen, under Juhel de Totnais; Osolf possessed it in the reign of Edward the Confessor, and in the time of Henry II. it was in the hands of Maurice de la Pole and long continued to be the property and residence of this noble family, ancestors of the celebrated antiquary, Sir William Pole; and on this account was for a considerable time designated Compton Pole: Lady Alice de la Pole gave the manor and castle to the Comptons, in whose possession it remained for seven descents: until a co-heiress of the Comptons, by marriage with the Gilberts, brought it, in the reign of Edward II. into the family of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, the great navigator and mathematician and half-brother to Sir W. Raleigh. In the reign of Edward VI. this manor and castle were held by Elias Bishop, in whose family they remained during several generations, but subsequently re-purchased by the Gilberts and held by them until a late period, when the property was acquired by the Templers of Stover, and from these passed into the hands of John Bishop esq. a descendant of its ancient owners. The chief landowners are Cecil Edward Bewes esq. of Hillside, Ridgeway, Plympton; Sir George Farwell, justice of the High Court, of 60 Queen’s gardens, Bayswater, London W, Pearcy Beavis Holberton esq. and Charles Herbert Mallock esq. of Cockington Court. The soil is limy, and subsoil, rocky. The chief crops are grass. The area of the parish is 2,547 acres; rateable value, £4,416; the population in 1891 was 528.

By Local Government Board Order 16,370, Apton Farm and Cottages were added to this parish from Ipplepen, in Newton Abbot union, March 24, 1884.

National School (mixed), erected in 1864, for 140 children; average attendance, 96.
