Historical Description

MARWOOD is a parish and village on the Ilfracombe road, 3 miles north-north-west from Barnstaple stations on the London and South-Western and Great Western railways, in the North Western division of the county, Braunton hundred and petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch, and a western embattled tower containing 6 bells, cast in 1771: a richly carved screen, bearing the name of John Beapul, rector in the reign of Henry VIII. crossed the north aisle: the rood loft stairs exist, but the screen disappeared within recent years: the chancel retains an Early English piscina: the carved stone font was presented by the lata Mrs. Ann Tyrell, and the old one buried underneath to preserve it: the south porch has a Sun. dial, made by John Berry, of this parish, in 1762, which shows the approximate time at the principal capitals of Europe and at Jerusalem: the church plate includes flagon dated 1671, alms dish 1678, paten 1714, and a cup with cover of the time of Elizabeth: there are 200 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1878 by the addition of the parish bowling green. The register dates from the year 1602. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £396, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Henry Theodore Edward Barlow M.A. of that College. The Mission church at Muddiford is a building of wood, erected in 1864, consisting of nave only, and has 120 sittings. There is a Congregational chapel, two Wesleyan chapels and one for the Plymouth Brethren. The charities are of £34 yearly value. The country from Whitfield hill, through Swindon, across to Patsford down, affords evidence of the presence of iron ore in large quantities, and at Milltown there is a quarry of old red sandstone. Prixford House is the property of Mrs. Smith, of Riversdale, Marwood Hill, the property of Miss Landon and Mrs. Goodban, is at present occupied by William C. Ernest Arthur esq. J.P. Lee House, Prixford Barton and Town Ridden are now the property of George Brown esq. Roborough. The Earl of Devon and the representatives of the Cutcliffe family are lords of the manor; Charles Chichester esq. of Hall, Barnstaple, Mijor John Stafford Goldie Harding, of Sandgate, Kent, Miss Arundell Yeo, of Fremington House, William Smith esq. John Brady esq. Miss Crang, Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Jury are land owners. The soil is very rich and loamy; subsoil, slate and old red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 5,374 acres; rateable value, £4,990; the population in 1901 was 686.
