Historical Description

MARY TAVY (or St. Mary Tavy) is a parish on the road from Tavistock to Okehampton, with a station on the Launceston branch of the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and is 3 ½ miles north from Tavistock and 264 from London; it is in the Western division of the county, Lifton hundred, Tavistock petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Tavistock, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. Lydford railway station is also in this parish. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, chiefly built in the reign of Henry VI. with additions in 1553 and 1893, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, transept, south aisle, porch and vestries, and a low embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 5 bells: at the eastern end of the south aisle there appears to have been a chantry chapel, which retains a piscina, and in the jamb of the adjoining window is a niche with bracket, which has been restored and a figure of the Virgin and Child placed within it as a memorial to a daughter of the Rev. H. P. Russell, who died in 1890 aged 9 years: on the south side of the chancel is another piscina: on the north side is an external turret for the staircase once leading to the rood loft: a handsome rood screen, with the usual rood figures, and a parclose of oak were erected in 1893, and there are a number of modern stained windows: in the porch remain the ancient stocks and portions of the old timber roof, and a tablet of encaustic tiles, with a complete list of rectors from 1270: the font is plain, with an octagonal basin: during the restoration some roughly carved grave stones were discovered, with the dates 1691 and 1766; the church was reseated with open benches and thoroughly restored in 1878—9, at a cost of £1,565, by the Rev. Walter Champernowne M.A. a former rector, and his family: in 1887 an organ and gallery were built, at a cost of £115, and in 1893 the church was enlarged by the addition of a small transept, vestry and sacristy: the communion plate includes a silver chalice dated 1666: there are 100 sittings. On the south side of the churchyard stands a fine cross of Perpendicular date, raised on a base of four steps. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £223, with 39 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Emily Anderson, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Irvine Kempt Anderson. The mission church of St. Joseph, at Horndon, was erected in 1884, at a cost of £200, and affords 40 sittings, and there is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built in 1835. John Oxenham, and Richard Bowhay esqrs. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, rock and gravel. The land is partly in pasture and partly arable. The area is 4,255 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £3,688; the population in 1891 was 733 in the civil and 634 in the ecclesiastical parish.
