The parish is divided into two tithings, north and south. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, 74 feet high, containing 5 bells, one of which bears the arms of Fry; the tower was restored and the bells renovated during the period 1898—1901, at a cost of about £850; the chancel is Early English and retains a piscina; the north wall of the nave appears to be of the Decorated period; in the south aisle is a monument with mutilated inscription and arms to Sir Shilston Calmady kt. who fell in a skirmish near this village 13 Feb. 1645—6: at the east end of the south aisle are several memorials to the Frys of Yarty, including a monument with kneeling effigies to Nicholas Fry and Eleanor (Brett), his wife, ob. 18 March, 1620, and several children: at the north end of the north or St. Catherine’s aisle is the stone effigy of a female; there is another monument, with fine marble bust, to Frances, daughter of Robert Fry, of Yarty, d. 18 March, 1718; one to Mary (Napper), wife of John Fry, ob. 1683, and to other members of the family, from 1725 to 1742; the church was restored in 1893 at a cost of about £1,500, and during the progress of the work, a Norman pier was met with near the tower: the stained east window was erected in 1900 as a memorial to the Rev. Francis Tate, vicar of the united parishes of Axminster, Kilmington and Membury, 1855—69, and to Emma, his wife. The register of baptisms and burials dates from and marriages, 1638; many entries relating to Quakers appear in the register. Arthur Newman M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and surrogate; the Rev. Fredk. Edwd. Whitter Langdon M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, has been curate in charge since 1897. The charities amount to £3 13s. yearly. There are lime and stone quarries here. At Court are the remains of an ancient chapel, now used as a cider cellar; another chapel once existed at Chapel Croft, and was licensed by Bishop Grandison in 1352. A Quakers’ burial place is still to be seen at Lea Hill farm. Membury Castle Hill is an ancient Romano-British camp. Yarty, the ancient seat of the Frys till 1718, and about a mile west, is now a farm; it originally belonged to the de Yartie family, whose heiress conveyed it to the Frys in marriage; the original mansion was destroyed by fire about 1870.
