Merton Banns (1722-1882)

Historical Description

MERTON is a parish and village, on the river Torridge, 7 miles south-east from Torrington terminal station of a branch of the London and South Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, Shebbear hundred, Torrington petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Torrington, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of All Saints is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, of which the fourth dates from 1669, the tenor from 1752; the first and fifth were cast by Warner, of London, in 1858; the second is inscribed “Plebs omnis plaudit ut me tam saepius audit”; weight of tenor 10 cwt.: the church retains an ancient register chest, and has five stained windows, one of which is a memorial: the north east window, a work of early date, was restored and filled with stained glass in 1847: in the north aisle is a memorial window to the rector’s daughter: the church was restored in 1875 at a cost of £1,951, under the direction of Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect, the Speccott aisle being rebuilt at the cost of J. C. Moore-Stevens esq. the chancel by the late rector, and the remainder of the church by Lord Clinton and others; the screens and fittings being the work of Hems, of Exeter: in 1895 a new organ, the gift of parishioners and friends, was erected as a memorial to the late Rev. James Cory Kempe M.A. for over 40 years rector of this parish: there are 310 sittings. In 1892 a lych gate was erected at the eastern entrance to the church. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1687; marriages, 1688. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £273, with residence and 63 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Clinton, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Frederic Robinson M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford, hon. chaplain to Sir Massey Lopes bait. Here is a Bible Christian chapel. There are charities of 5s. yearly value, left in 1727 by Thomas Langdon, who also left £1 for the rector for preaching a sermon on the anniversary of his death, Sept. 5th. Here is an Industrial Home for 25 orphan girls, supported by Lady Clinton. The Victoria saw mill, erected in 1887, is driven by water-power from a large ornamental lake of 3 acres, the property of Lord Clinton. Lord Clinton, Lord-Lieut. of the county, is lord of the manor and owner of the whole parish, with the exception of Great Potheridge, which belongs to the Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle, and Speccotfa, which is the property of John Curzon Moore-Stevens esq. of Winscott. The soil is dun; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,046 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £2,937; the population in 1901 was 507.

GREAT POTHERIDGE was the birthplace (December 6th, 1608) of General Monk, afterwards Duke of Albemarle, who is said to have been baptised, at Landcross, near Bideford. He died January 3rd, 1670, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
