Historical Description

MORCHARD BISHOP is a large parish and village on the old road from Exeter to Barnstaple, 2 ½ miles north-east from Morchard Road station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, 7 south-east from Chulmleigh, 7 north-west from Crediton, 15 north-west from Exeter, 14 west-by-south from riverton, in the Northern division of the county, Crediton hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 6 bells: in the south aisle are two mutilated recumbent effigies in freestone of a civilian and his wife of the 16th century, assumed to represent Sir John Eyston, of Eyston, or Easton in this parish, and Margaret (Arundel) his wife, there is also a monument, with arms, to Gabriel Greene gent, ob. Nov. 2, 1685, and Dorothy (his wife, ob. 10 April, 1660, and some remains of oak screens also exist: the church was restored in 1889 at a cost of £1,928, and now affords 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £654, including 178 ¾ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. R. Bartholomew, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Herbert Springett Watkins B.A. of Durham University. Here are Congregational and Bible Christian chapels. There are charities of £60 yearly value; and in addition one of £10 a year, left in 1733 by Mrs. Thomasine Tucker, for the education and clothing of eight girls and boys. A small charity payable out of the Rudge estate was revived in 1887 by William Henry Kelland esq. as a memorial to his mother, the maternal granddaughter of the late P. Kelland, of Rudge and Bowerthy in Lapford.

A fair is held on the first Monday after the 9th September, yearly, for cattle. Beech Hill, the residence of Charles Comyns Tucker esq. J.P. is a pleasant mansion, originally built c. 1707, during the reign of Queen Anne; it was restored in 1810, and almost entirely rebuilt in 1896—7. Barton House, half a mile north-east, a handsome modern residence, is the residence of the Hon. John Fellowes Wallop. Aish House, the property of C. Mortimer esq. is at present (1901) unoccupied. The rector is lord of the manor. The Hon. John F. Wallop, who is lord of Barton Manor, Charles Comyn Tucker esq. J.P. William Tucker Arundel Radford, of Nymet Rowland, Frank Saunders and Charles Mortimer esqrs. and the Messrs. Leach are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and clay, and the subsoil is clay and shale. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 7,169 acres; rateable value, £6,728; the population in 1901 was 985.
