Historical Description

MOREBATH is a small village and parish on the Somersetshire border, and on the road from Bampton to Minehead, with a station on the Devon and Somerset branch of the Great Western railway, 180 ½ miles from London, and is 2 miles north from Bampton and 9 north from Tiverton, in the North Eastern division of the county, Bampton hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Dulverton union, Tiverton county court district, rural deanery of West Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. George is a plain building of stone in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, with organ chamber and vestry on the north side, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and a western tower with gable roof and containing 6 bells: there are several monuments to the Bere and Sayer families: the church was restored in 1874—5 at a cost of £2,338: the east window is a memorial to Montague Baker Bere, d. 1858: and in the aisle is a memorial window to the Rev. Richard Bere LL.B. 58 years rector of Skilgate, d. 1865; a stained west window has been placed in the tower to Philip Charles Cavan, d. 1870: the church, affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £165, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Montague Acland Bere B.A. of St. Matthew’s, Victoria Docks, London E, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Annesley Montagus Voysey M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. A sum of £45, arising from land in the parish, left by an anonymous benefactor, is given to resident labourers; a school and almshouses were founded and endowed in 1688 by John Brooke, with £100 for building, £4 annually for repairs, £10 yearly for schoolmaster and 12s. per month for 2 poor persons: the almshouses were removed to an adjacent site in 1876. Timewell House, an ancient mansion, mentioned in the church records of the 14th century, commands very extensive views southwards, extending to the Blackdown hills and the Wellington monument, and is the residence of William Bradshaw Paulin esq. East Timewell is the residence of Col. Robert Anstice Prideaux. The Manor House is the residence of Charles Digby Harrod esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay, gravel and rock. The chief crops are wheat and barley, with extensive grass lands. The area is 3,464 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £3,661; the population in 1901 was 424.

National School (mixed & infants), founded in 1688 & enlarged in 1876, on the removal of the almshouses, for 100 children; average attendance, 75.
