Historical Description

Moreton Hampstead, a town beautifully situated upon a rising ground, surrounded on every side but the west by high hills. The inhabitants of this place are much engaged in the woollen trade, and the manufacture of serges for the East India Company. The police is managed by a port-reeve and other officers, elected annually at the court-leet of the lord of the manor. The situation of Moreton Hampstead is remarkably recluse, and divided from the rest of the county; so that a stranger can observe a striking difference in the dialect and manners of the inhabitants. The population, as returned in 1821, was persons 1932, houses 386.

Here are vestiges of two castles, and in the neighbourhood may also be seen the ruins of a Druidical temple. The town has a handsome church, and a market on Saturday.

Lustleigh Cleve, near Moreton Hampstead, is one of the most romantic vallies in Devonshire; the river Bovey runs through it, and at one place is lost beneath the rocks.

Near the Exeter road leading from Moreton, is Blackstone Rock, an immense pile of granite; the shape is conical, and it rises to the height of several hundred feet.

The woollen trade has of late much declined. The roads leading to Moreton Hampstead are very much improved; a new road has been made leading to Exeter for the space of several miles, by which means the hills have been cut off: the town is now more accessible to carriages.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MORETON HAMPSTEAD is a market town standing on a gentle eminence surrounded by hills and on the high road from Tavistock to Exeter, 4 miles from the eastern border of Dartmoor, and a terminus of a branch (opened in 1866) of the Great Western railway from Newton Abbot; it is 12 miles west-south-west from Exeter, 12 north from Newton Abbot, 12 south from Crediton and 226 by rail from London; the parish is in the Mid division of the county, Teignbridge hundred, Crockernwell petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union and county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The town is a borough by prescription, and was formerly governed by a portreeve, and an annual court was held by the Earl of Devon, but this has been discontinued; it is lighted with gas by a local company, and supplied with water from works erected in 1893. The scenery near Fingle Mill, north of the parish, is justly celebrated, and attracts numerous visitors in the summer season. The church of St. Andrew is a building of granite in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock, chimes and 6 bells; the tenor bell was replaced in 1894 by a new one, presented by the Cuming family of Linscott, as a memorial to their father: there are three good stained windows: the rood screen was removed in 1857, part being taken, by order of the Earl of Devon, then patron, to Powderham Castle, and the rest to Whitchurch, near Tavistock: the church was restored in 1884—9, and further in 1890, at a cost of £600, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. and held since 1901 by the Rev. Stanley Daws Dewey M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. The Calvinistic Baptist chapel in Fore street, erected about 1790, will seat 150; the Congregational chapel, in Station road, erected in 1868, has 200 sittings; there is also a Wesleyan chapel in Cross street, erected in 1817, with 160 sittings; and a Unitarian chapel, also in Cross street, erected in 1802, with sittings for 150 persons. A field of about 8 acres adjoining the church, called “The Sentry,” is used by the inhabitants as a recreation ground. The Smethurst schoolhouse, in Fore street, was built from money left for that purpose by the Rev. J. Smethurst, a former Unitarias minister here; it is used for magistrates’ meetings, concerts and lectures, and on Sundays as a school; it will hold about 500 people. A library and reading room, the gift of Thomas Benjamin Bowring esq. is now (1901) in course of erection. The market was formerly held on Saturday, the charter for which, and for two fairs held on the third Thursday in July and the last Thursday in November, was obtained by Hugh de Courtenay, in 1335; the market is now held on Tuesday, and in lieu of the above two fairs a great market for cattle is held on the fourth Tuesday in each month. The early closing day is on Thursday. On the north-western border of the parish are the remains of two ancient entrenchments, called Cranbrook and Wooston Castles, which overhang the valley of the reign, and are objects of great interest to strangers and antiquaries. In the town, near the church, there is an elm tree, said to be over 300 years old, and near it stands an ancient cross of the Tau shape, of which few now remain. The late Mr. George Parker Bidder, the celebrated calculator and engineer, a friend of George Stephenson and president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1860—1, was born here in 1806. The G Co. 5th (the Hay Tor) Volunteer Battalion Devonshire Regiment, which has its head quarters here, was formed May, 1896; the drill hall is in Station road. There is a convalescent home here, established by the Misses Phillips, and supported by voluntary contributions: there are beds for 23 patients; the average number admitted annually is 162: the home is open for the reception of patients from April 1st to December 21st. A Cottage Hospital, situate on the Chagford road, was erected in 1900, the entire cost of the building and furniture being defrayed by the Hon. W. F. D. Smith J.P., M.P. and endowed by him with £2,000, invested in Consols: the hospital contains 5 free beds and a separate bed for paying patients, and is further supported by voluntary subscriptions. The medical officers give their services gratuitously. There is house property here producing about £45 yearly, which, after deducting amounts for repairs, is applied to the beautifying and adorning of the church. The Almshouse charity, consisting of 4 cottages, producing a rental of £18, is administered by trustees and distributed amongst the poor. Hill’s charity, of £10 yearly, is vested in trustees for educational purposes connected with the Board Schools. The Hon. William Frederick Danvers Smith M.P. of Hayne House, who is lord of the manor, John Baldwin Gregory esq. lord of the manor of Doccombe, Robert William Crump esq. George Wills esq. Messrs. Cuming Brothers, and the Corporation of Torquay, are the principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are granite. The area is 7,893 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £8,898; the population in 1901 was 1,541, and 1,540 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

In 1885, by Local Government Board Order 16,337, Pepperdown, a detached part of Lustleigh, was amalgamated with this parish for civil purposes.

Petty Sessions are held at Smethurst schoolhouse, Moreton Hampstead, at 11 a.m.. the fourth Tuesday in the month; the police station is also an occasional court house. The following parishes are included in the petty sessional division:-Bridford, Chagford, Cheriton Bishop, Drewsteignton, Dunsford, Gidleigh, Hittisleigh, Lustleigh, Moreton Hampstead, North Bovey, Spreyton, South Tawton, Tedburn St. Mary & Throwleigh.
