Historical Description

MUSBURY is a parish and village on the road from Axminster to Seaton, and near the river Axe, 2 miles north-east from Colyton station on the Seaton branch of the London and South Western railway, 3 south from Axminster and 9 south-east from Honiton, in the Eastern division of the county, Axminster hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, of mixed styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: at the east end of the south aisle is a fine table tomb in the Renaissance style, to members of the Drake family; the base is divided by short pilasters into three compartments, each of which is filled with ornamental scroll work inclosing a shield of arms of the Drakes of Ashe; and immediately above these runs a frieze, similarly divided by plaques, and bearing three inscriptions; the upper portion of the monument is also in three compartments, separated by screens, pierced with coupled circular-headed openings; each compartment contains a pair of effigies, male and female, kneeling at a desk, the knights in full armour, with ruffs and chains, and their wives in black gowns and wearing caps and chains; the first pair represent John Drake of Ashe esq. ob. 4th October, 1558, and Amy (Graynfield), his wife, ob. 18th February, 1557; the next, Sir Bernard Drake kt. ob. 10th April, 1586, and Gertrude (Fortescue), his wife, ob. c. 12th February, 1601, and the last, John Drake esq. his son, bur. 11th April, 1628, and Dorothy (Button), his wife, bur. 13th December, 1631; and there is, in continuation, an inscription to Mary, wife of Sir Hugh Rosewell kt. bur. 4th November, 1643; there are other memorials to the Drake family, including Sir Wm. Drake kt. and bart. d. 28th February, 1715, and Sir John Drake bart. d. 4th September, 1724, besides inscriptions of earlier date, from 1648 to 1690: the spiral north and south stairs to the rood loft still remain: the church, with the exception of the south aisle and tower, has been rebuilt, reseated and paved, and a new organ, costing 250 guineas, built, at a total cost of about £1,500: the reredos, of Venetian mosaic, was given by Sir William Drake, of Oatlands, Surrey; the stained east window is a memorial to William Farley Lethbridge and his wife, and was erected by their children; there are also two stained windows in the south aisle to various parishioners: the church affords 235 sittings. The register dates from the year 1622. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £260, without residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Vaughan Payne M.A. and held since 1863 by the Rev. Horace William Thrupp M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a Baptist chapel. Musbury Castle, a British or Roman camp, is in this parish. A fair was formerly held on the first Monday after Michaelmas day, for the sale of cattle, but has fallen into disuse. Ashe House, now a farm house, was anciently the seat of the Drake family, and here, 31st August, 1660, Sir John Drake kt. was created a baronet; his sister Elizabeth, who married Sir Winston Churchill kt. was the mother of John Churchill, the great Duka of Marlborough, who was born here 24th June, 1650. The Rev. John Vaughan Payne M.A. of Brunswick road, Gloucester, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey and sandy; the subsoil is gravel. The crops are wheat, barley, roots and pasture. The area is 2,215 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £3,545; the population in 1901 was 422.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Nov. 12, 1875; James Halse Row, clerk to the board; Gilbert Thomas White, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1878, at a post of about £1,250, for 100 children; average attendance, 28 boys, 29 girls & 32 infants.
