Historical Description
Newton Ferrers, on the banks of the Yealm, is in a pleasing and salubrious situation; which renders it a favourite place of retirement for naval officers. The parish church is a plain building, consisting of a nave and two aisles; in the chancel, is the monument of Grace, wife of A. Clifford, Rector of Newton, and daughter of Potter, Bishop of Carlisle. The hamlet of Noss, on the opposite side of the creek, forms a pleasing object; as are the grounds of Membland, at the head of the valley: this mansion and lands are the property of Sir John Perring, Bart.
NEWTON FERRERS is a parish and village, pleasantly seated on an eminence on the north of a navigable creek which runs into the river Yealm and nearly 2 miles from the sea coast, 3 south from Yealmpton station on the new line from Plymouth to Yealmpton, 8 south from Plympton station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 7 ½ south-east from Plymouth and 9 south-west from Ivybridge, in the Southern division of the county, Ermington County Council division, hundred of Ermington, petty sessional division of Ermington and Plympton, union of Plympton St. Mary, county court district of East Stonehouse, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of the Holy Cross is an edifice of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch with carved wagon roof and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 6 bells: there are several monuments in the church to the Potter and Yonge families, and memorial windows to the Rev. John Yonge B.A. rector from 1812, and to the Rev. Duke Yonge M.A. rector, 1877—82, to whom also a marble and alabaster reredos has been erected as a memorial: the new oak parclose screens, and a font of veined alabaster were executed by Mr. Harry Hems, of Exeter: the church was restored in 1886, at a cost of £4,400, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £306, including 88 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Yonge esq. B.A., J.P. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Burell Yonge M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. St. Mary’s chapel, a private chapel attached to Gnaton Hall, the property of John Charles Williams esq. M.A., J.P. was built in 1886 by the owner at a cost of about £3,500, and is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, from designs by G. H. F. Prynne, architect, consisting of chancel, nave and north and south porches; a dado of coloured Devonshire marble runs round the interior: the altar and triptych are of carved oak; the screen, pulpit and the lectern are of brass, beautifully wrought: the font is of Caen stone with marble shafts: on the walls of the nave and in the south porch are paintings on oak of scriptural subjects, by Mr. E. A. F. Prynne, let into the walls: the chapel affords 74. sittings: the public are admitted to the services, which are held once on Sundays by the clergy of the parish. There is a lifeboat station. Puslinch House, the property and residence of John Yonge esq. B.A., J.P. is beautifully seated. Messrs. T. & Vaughan Holberton and Michael Williams esq. are lords of the manor of Newton, and John Yonge esq. is lord of the manor of Puslinch. John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhays Castle, Cornwall, Messrs. T. and V. Holberton, Baldwin John Pollexfen Bastard esq. of Kitley, William Cresswell Gray, of Seaton Carew, Durham, and John Yonge esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is light sandy; subsoil, rocks. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,326 acres of land, 1 of water, 37 of tidal water and 133 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,524; the population in 1891 was 710.
