Historical Description

NORTH HUISH is a parish and village on the river Avon, 2 miles south from Wrangaton, late Kingsbridge Road station, on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and one mile from Avonwick station on the new line to Kingsbridge, and 7 south-west from Totnes, in the Southern division of the comity, Stanborough hundred, Stanborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, Totnes union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church (dedication uncertain, but supposed to be to St. Mary), consecrated June 15, 1336, by Bishop Grandison, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept and a western tower with spire containing 5 bells: the original stone altar slab is still in the church and there are also remains of a very fine carved oak chancel screen: the font is of granite, and is dated 1662; the church was restored in 1884—5 a cost of £600, and affords 250 sittings; the shaft of the churchyard cross is built up in the lych gate. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, including 74 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Miss S. E. Foster, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry John Coachafer M.A., LL.B, of Trinity College, Dublin. The Congregationalists have a chapel here, and the stipend of the minister is provided for by a charge on Norris farm. The charities amount to £19 yearly. Richard Cory esq. of Langdon Court, who is lord of the manor; Frederic James Cornish-Bowden esq. of Black Hall, Avonwick; B. F. T. Hare esq. Curtis Knowle, Diptford, Harris Crimp esq. Admiral George Parker, of Delamore, Ivybridge; H. T. Kingswell esq. and Messrs. Parsons, are the chief landowners. The land is chiefly in pasture. The soil is rich loam; the subsoil is dunstone. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,178 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £3,933; the population in 1891 was 344.
