Historical Description

NORTH PETHERWIN is a village and parish 3 miles north from Egloskerry station on the London and South Western railway and 5 north-west from Launceston, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington hundred, Lifton petty sessional division, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Paternus is an ancient edifice in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, with north aisle, separated from it by an arcade of 2 arches, clerestoried nave, north aisle with arcade of five arches, north and south porches and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, and containing 5 bells, all recast by John Pennington and Co. in 1779: the three piers of the north aisle of the nave are Norman work, with Pointed arches, over which are Early English clerestory windows: there are the remains of an original cruciform church: the chancel is Early English with inserted Perpendicular windows: the tower and north porch are of the 14th century; the chancel aisle, the south aisle of the nave, and the south porch with its original iron scroll work hinges are early 16th century work: one third of the lower part of the ancient screen and two par-closes exist, and date from about 1530: the pulpit and the screens of the organ chamber and vestry are very fine examples of modern oak carving: two of the windows are stained, and there are numerous mural ornaments to the Yeo and Seacombe families: the church was restored in 1876 by the 9th Duke of Bedford K.G. at a cost of over £3,000: in 1880 an organ was erected, at a cost of £233, and in 1890 a reredos and altar table of carved oak, painted and gilt, and executed by the present vicar, was also added: the church affords 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £180, including 159 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Bedford, and held since 1867 by the Rev. Thomas Braithwaite Trentham B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village and another at Brassacot; Bible Christian chapels at Navarino and at Maxworthy, and a Free Methodist chapel at Copthorne. There are charities of 10s. a year for a sermon to be preached on New Year’s day, and 10s. for the poor. The Duke of Bedford, who is lord of the manor, Richard Hawke esq. and Mr. John Reed are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay and slate rock. The chief crop is oats, and there is some pasture. The area is 8,195 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £4,619; the population in 1901 was 682.

A School Board of 5 members was formed February 20, 1873; Francis Kneebone, Troswell, clerk to the board & school attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1877, for 170 children; average attendance, 87; the former National school is now used as a vestry room & Sunday school.
