Historical Description

NORTHAM is a parish and village standing on an eminence commanding a beautiful view of Barnstaple and Bideford Bay and of Lundy Island, 1 ¾ miles north from Bideford station on the Torrington branch of the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Shebbear hundred, Bideford petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter.

The parish is governed by an Urban District Council of twelve members, constituted under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73).

The church of St. Margaret is a very fine building of stone in the Decorated or Early Perpendicular style, completely restored between 1849 and 1865, and consists of chancel and nave, each with a north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast in 1770 by Thomas Bilbie, of Collumpton: there are several fine modern stained windows: the church affords 600 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1538; marriages, 1606; burials, 1541. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Westward Ho. Annexed, yearly value £290, with 2 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Marcus Dimond Dimond-Churchward M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, rural dean of Hartland and prebendary of Exeter cathedral. There is a mission room on the Torridge bank, erected in 1885, and seating 150. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels at Northam and a Wesleyan chapel at Northam Ridge. The charities are of about £100 yearly value, and there are almshouses for four old maids and four old widows. The Unionist Club, in Fore street, was erected in 1896, from designs by Mr. G. Malam Wilson M.S.A. architect, of Bideford, and contains a reading or lecture room, which can be divided at pleasure, and ladies apartment. The Pebble or “Boulder Ridge,” at the mouth of the Taw and Torridge, about 2 miles distant, is a great natural curiosity. From Northam a steep hill descends to Northam Burrows, contiguous to Westward Ho. where there is a level plain of turf of 1,000 acres, formed by the sandy deposit from the sea and rivers, and now protected from the waves by the Pebble Ridge; this remarkable barrier extends about 2 miles in a straight line, like an artificial embankment; it is about 50 feet wide and 20 feet high, and consists of rolled slate-stones, or pebbles, which vary in size from half a foot to 2 feet in diameter; it is singularly uniform and compact, on the one side sloping steeply to the turf of the Burrows; on the other, at a less inclination, to a broad area of sand, but scarcely a pebble is to be found on the turf or the shore beyond the base of the ridge. In this form it stretches from the distant cliffs to a point opposite the bar of the rivers, but once within the influence of this obstruction, it loses its character of a ridge and lies heaped upon sloping sandhills. The shore scene is exceedingly wild, and the view of the coast, of Lundy Island, and the estuary of the Taw and Tor-ridge, most interesting; at low water the dangerous bar is seen stretching athwart the entrance of the rivers, and on the Braunton Burrows opposite is a lighthouse: on the sea-coast is a remarkable and interesting common called “The Burrows,” fenced on two sides for a space of 3 miles by a vast barrier of boulders, surrounded and smoothed by the waves, and described in the Rev. Charles Kingsley’s “Westward Ho.” A revel is held yearly on Whit Monday. The neighbourhood abounds in antiquities. At Kenwith Castle are the remains of ancient fortifications, in the attack on which, in A.D. 877—8, the Danes, under Hubba, were defeated by the Saxons, under Alfred, and their Raven standard captured; a spot, still known as “Bloody Comer,” is traditionally regarded as the scene of a duel between two of the chieftains. Hallsannery House, now occupied by Richard Boucher James esq. is a modern mansion, pleasantly situated on the south side of Bideford and commanding magnificent sea and land views. The approach to Northam from the Bideford Road is highly picturesque on account of the numerous villas and country houses scattered over the hilly grounds; among these the principal are Port Hill, the residence of Capt. Thomas Edward Gordon; Raleigh, a finely-seated mansion, occupied by George Downton Leman esq.; Wellesbourne, the residence of George Brayley-Brayley esq.; Lenwood, the seat of the Misses Wren; Durrants, occupied by George Waddington esq.; Conybeare, by Joseph Bower Siddall M.D., D.P.H.; Woodville, by Col. Dawson Townley; Clevelands, by Claud C. R. S. Carnegie esq.; and Elm Field, by Mrs. Thrupp. Lieut.-Col. J. F. M. Winterscale J.P. of Westward Ho. Major M. E. Archdale and the vicar, are lords of the manor, and G. Gorton esq. is steward. The principal landowners are Captain George Mill Frederick Molesworth, of Westward Ho. Wilson Hoare esq. J.P. George J. Taylor esq. of Abbotsham Court, S. B. James esq. C. C. R. S. Carnegie esq. J.P. the trustees of the late William Yeo, the Misses Wren and the trustees of the late Mrs. Pynsent. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil, gravel and rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,034 acres of land, 8 of water, 04 of tidal water and 1,423 of foreshore; rateable value, £15,861; the population in 1901 was (including Westward Ho. & Appledore) 5,357.

National (mixed), erected in 1838, & since enlarged, for 300 children; average attendance, 208.

Infants, erected in 1858, for 120 children; average attendance, 100; founded by the late Mrs. Thorold & endowed with a building (which, previous to the Reformation, was a religious house) & about 111 ¾ acres of land.
