Historical Description
NORTHLEIGH is a parish consisting of a few scattered houses, 4 miles south-east from Honiton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and 20 east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter.
The church of St. Giles is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower, with a turret at the north-west angle, and containing 4 bells, rehung in 1897: the chancel, rebuilt about 1858, is separated from the nave by a handsomely-carved screen: in 1869 the church was new roofed and the nave and tower restored; the latter at the cost of the late Sir Edmund S. Prideaux bart.; there is a memorial window to the Rev. H. P. Daniell, a former rector, erected by his daughter, Miss M. F. Daniell, and a marble tablet in the north aisle to Robert Underdown esq. formerly of this parish, d. 2 April, 1811: the font is Norman. There are 150 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1700; marriages, 1708; burials, 1697. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £140, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1896 by the Rev. Walter Champernowne M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The Parsonage House has been rebuilt of flint and rag stone, with freestone dressings, in the Jacobean style. There are charities consisting of 8 acres of land in the parish, producing £11 yearly, which is distributed amongst the industrious poor; the Rev. James How also gave by will £200 Consols for ever, the interest of £100 for the establishment and support of a Sunday school, and the interest of the other £100 to be distributed in bread and money to the poor on Christmas day. The Rev. William Henry Baptist Proby M.A. of Colyton, is lord of the manor. The Rev. Alfred Marwood Elton B.A. of Widworthy; Charles Glyn Prideaux-Brune esq. of 10 Grosvenor gardens, London S.W., and the Misses Outhwaite are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, red marl. The crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,172 acres; rateable value, £1,208; the population in 1891 was 190 in the civil and 180 in the ecclesiastical parish, and 172 in the civil parish in 1901.
By Local Government Board Order 16,349, Coombe and Smallcombe Farms were transferred from Ottwell to Northleigh, March 24, 1884, for civil purposes.
