Historical Description
OAKFORD (or Okeford) is a parish and village near the river Exe, which is crossed by a bridge to Bampton, and is 3 ½ miles west-by-south from Bampton station on the Exe Valley branch, 4 south from Dulverton station on the Devon and Somerset branch, of the Great Western railway, and 9 north-north-west from Tiverton, in the North Eastern division of the county, Witheridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of West Tiverton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter, rebuilt, with the exception of the 15th century tower, in 1839, is an edifice in the Early Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 8 bells: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. James Parkin, rector from 1814, who died 1871, and there is another to the younger son of the rector, who died in 1898, aged 10 years: the church was restored, during the period 1873—88, at a cost of £512, and affords 340 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged, in 1900, by a quarter of an acre of land given by the rector; the cost of enclosure was met by gifts and a voluntary rate. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £766, including 90 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Sir J. W. H. Anson bart. (d. 1873), and held since 1893 by the Rev. Donald Campbell M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, rural dean of West Tiverton. At Oakford is an iron church, in which divine service is held on Sunday evenings. There is a chapel for Bible Christians, erected in 1888. The reading room, opened in 1885, is supplied with daily and weekly papers and contains a small library. The Dame Pyncombe charity, dating from 1780, provides annually £25, which is paid to the master and mistress of the school. There are also parochial charities left by the Rev. James Parkin, a former rector, who died in 1871; these amount to £82 yearly, and of this sum £17 is for the poor, and £31 for the school master; the remainder is assigned to the organist, the Sunday school, and the purchase of books for the day school. The Hill or Spurwav charity of £3 is distributed in bread. Hamslade, standing on an eminence of 500 feet above the sea level, overlooking the Exe valley, is the residence of Robert Macalister esq. Thomas Carew Daniel esq. of Stuckeridge and Maj.-Gen. John Spurway are joint lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil, rock. The chief crops are oats and barley. The area is 5,424 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, £3,129; the population in 1901 was 496.
Endowed School (boys), erected in 1842, for 50 children; average attendance, 38 boys; (girls, infants) erected in 1875, for 40 children; average attendance, 33; & endowed with the Pyncombe charity & £31 a year left by the Rev. James Parkin M.A. a former rector, for the schoolmaster.
