Historical Description

OFFWELL is a village and parish 2 ½ miles south-east from Honiton station on the London and South Western railway, and 12 south-east from Cullompton, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: it was re-seated about 1863, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1551. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £284, including 83 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Dr. Copleston, Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Henry Copleston M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford, and rural dean of Dunkeswell and Honiton. There are charities of £7 10s. yearly value. On Honiton hill, in this parish, and about 2 miles from the town of Honiton, is an ornamental tower about 80 feet high, built by Dr. Copleston, late Bishop of Llandaff (1828—49), and commanding extensive views of the sea and surrounding country; it is now the property of Charles Every Cox esq. Offwell House, a former seat of the late Edward Copleston D.D. Bishop of Llandaff (1829—49), is now vacant. Rev. Alfred Marwood-Elton B.A. of Widworthy Court, E. Dommett esq. of Ottery, Charles Glyn Prideaux-Brune esq. of 10 Grosvenor gardens S W, the Marquess of Northampton and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy and stony; the subsoil is the same. The chief crops are wheat, oats and turnips. The area is 2,036 acres; rateable value, £2,440; the population in 1901 was 293 in the civil and 274 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

By Local Government Board Order, 16,349, Combe and Smallcombe Farms were transferred from this parish to Northleigh, March 24, 1884, for civil purposes.

School (mixed), built in 1840, for 70 children; average attendance, 40; & endowed with £5 yearly.
