Historical Description

PAYHEMBURY is a parish and village, on the Tale, a tributary of the river Otter, 2 miles north from Sidmouth Junction station on the London and South Western railway, 5 north from Ottery St. Mary, 6 west from Honiton and 14 north-east from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hayridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Honiton union and county court district, rural deanery of Ottery and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary, anciently belonging to Ford Abbey, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave with four bays, north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel was restored and a stained window erected in 1852, in memory of the Rev. Timothy Terry Jackson, vicar here from 1810, by Mrs. Catherine Messiter, in the chancel: in the spandrils of a window are the initials “T.C.” and a pastoral staff with the letter “C,” perhaps for Timothy Chard, last abbot of Ford; the arms of Courtenay appear on one of the pillars: a very fine wood screen, painted and gilt and bearing the Bourchier knot and the arms of Courtenay, Ferrers and Malherbe, divides the chancel from the nave, and there is another in the north aisle: the rood loft stairs also remain: there are monuments to Mrs. Dorothy Goswill and the Rev. Timothy Terry, 1745: the vestry was built in 1887 and contains a list of rectors and vicars from 1236: there are 280 sittings. In the churchyard is a yew tree, which appears to be several centuries old, the trunk of which has been split in four, apparently by lightning. The register of baptisms and marriages dates from the year 1559; burials, 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £196, including 81 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees, and held since 1864 by the Rev. George Terry Moulton Messiter-Terry M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The great tithes belong to Mrs. Campbell Bouverie Wyndham. The charities amount to £30 yearly. Edmund Frost in 1871 left £107 15s. 8d. in Consols, the interest to the poor in clothing or fuel. The view from the old Roman encampment of Hembury Fort is extensive. Leyhill is now the property of the vicar. Higher Leyhill is the property of E. Reginald Tweed M.D. The manor belonged in the reign of Henry III. to the family of Giffard, ancestors of Lord Halsbury, and the manor of Morden, together with the manor of Tale, once held by Ford Abbey, belongs to the Right Hon. Sir John H. Kennaway bark P.C.; the latter, after the Dissolution, was successively in the families of Goodwin and Saunder and of several others before it was purchased by its present owners. The Right Hon. Sir John Henry Kennaway bart. P.C. M.P., V.D., D.L., J.P. of Escot, Arthur Charles E. Locks esq. of The Grange, Honiton, William Warren esq. of Cokesputt, J. Hancock esq. of Exeter, Mrs. Campbell B. Wyndham and the vicar are chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay, sand and stonebrash. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, roots and pasturage. The area is 2,736 acres; rateable value, £3,346; the population in 1901 was 415.

National School (mixed), built in 1851. & enlarged in 1894, for 125 children; average attendance, 78.
