Historical Description

WESTON PEVEREL (or Pennycross) is a parish on the road from Devonport to Tavistock, 2 ½ miles north from Plymouth, Western division of the county, Roborough hundred and petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, county court district of East Stonehouse, rural deanery of Throe Towns, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. In November, 1898, the boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport were extended, by which was incorporated a large portion of this parish. The church of St. Pancras, possibly corrupted into “Pennycross,” is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, vestry and a belfry containing one bell, recast in 1821 and inscribed “venite adoremus dominum:” in the church are monuments to the family of Reginald Hall Parlby esq. of Manadon, and to the Clarke, Collins, Trelawny and other families: the church, enlarged in 1820, was restored in 1870, at a cost of £1,600, and a vestry is now (1901) being added at the cost of Alderman John Bright James J.P. as a memorial to his late wife: there are 250 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1634; marriages, 1636; burials, 1635. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £160, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Edward Waddington M.A. of Emanuel College, Cambridge. Montpelier Mission Hall seats 200 people. There are charities to the amount of £4 yearly value. St. Joseph’s House of the Little Sisters of the Poor, erected in 1885, is a fine building of stone in a Continental style, and contains 80 aged men and women. Manadon, the seat of Reginald Hall Parlby esq. is a mansion of stone, dating from 1567, mentioned in Doomsday Book, standing in extensive and well-wooded grounds. Ham is the property of the Rev. J. Trelawny Ross D.D. vicar of Paignton, and now occupied by Miss Arthurine Trelawny Collins; it was rebuilt in 1639 by Robert Trelawny esq. M.P. for Plymouth, and has grounds 109 acres in extent. Burleigh, the property and seat of Mrs. William Hawker, stands in grounds of 8 acres. Torr Grove is the residence of Mrs. Bayly; Highbury, of Rear-Admiral Joseph Edward Maitland Wilson J.P.; Pounds, of Sir John Jackson F.R.S.E. and Welby, of Mr. George Shellabear. Reginald Hall Parlby esq. is lord of the manor. Richard Hall Clarke esq. D.L., J.P. and the Rev. John Trelawny Ross D.D. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley and pasture. The area is 607 acres of land; rateable value, £2,741; the population in 1901 was 198.
